Congratulations to Annise Parker, the first openly gay mayor of a major U.S. City. Houston, Texas, the fourth largest city in the United States with about 2.2 million residents made history by electing Parker to be Mayor in a run-off election on December 12th.
Parker, who has been open about her sexuality throughout her political career, acknowledged the obviously historical moment then said, "But now, from this moment, let us join as one community."
Check out the Time bio of this politician to watch in 2010.

"Houston, TX of all places."
This may come as a shock, but Houston residents don't all ride around in Cadillac convertibles with longhorns strapped to the grill. We don't all wear cowboy hats and boots. We aren't all narrow-minded conservatives who rant and rave about "them homersexuals."
What we are is the fourth largest city in the U.S. We have a diverse multicultural population. We are the home of Rice University, the University of Houston, Texas Southern University, the University of Saint Thomas, and numerous junior and community colleges. We are the home of the Texas Medical Center, which leads the world in cancer and cardiac research. We have world class opera, symphony, ballet, modern dance, and theater. We have more museums than you can count, and we have some of the best food you have ever tasted. We are proud of who we are, and we don't apologize for it.
Yes, we elected a lesbian mayor. Why? Because she was the most qualified candidate. What a shock.
