Wednesgay news: Illinois Civil Unions FAIL

Frankly, I am Illinoyed. Last week, hundreds of Chicagoans marched in protest of Prop 8 in California for upholding the gay marriage ban instituted in November. Then, as of Sunday, once again the Illinois Civil Unions Bill was not passed in the General Assembly. This is not the first time the Civil Unions Bill was stalled due to other legislative issues, like Blago's impeachment, budget demands, tax reform, etc. I'm not saying those weren't important issues by any means, but if the General Assembly can pass a bill that requires Chicago Public School students to wash their hands with antiseptic before meals at school, then by jove, can we not grant some basic civil rights to families who love each other?

Even Iowa, which I had previously thought was predominantly corn fields and prisons, allows same sex marriage! So why is Illinois, a supposed bastion of progress and hope, continuing to be so sluggish, especially when two-thirds of Illinois residents favor rights for same sex couples (and that was back in 2005!). A recent ABC poll noted that 57% of Americans are in favor of civil unions nationwide.

From an email sent by Equality Illinois yesterday:
Every major newspaper in the State has editorialized in favor of civil unions. There is no excuse for legislators to deny fair treatment of same-sex couples any longer.
You can contact your legislators through their website here to let them know how you feel about this issue.

Other sex news:

The gayest man on earth may think this is over the top, but this Literal Bonnie Tyler video of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" made my day (week? life?)

Virgin does not want to play with Playboy

Are these anti-porn videos creepy or hilarious?

If you walk around your house naked a lot, at least try to do so without traumatizing 13 year-old girls [Chicago Tribune]
