Cornell alums celebrate the Big Red victory at Harry Caray's Steakhouse.

Talk about March Madness!! Today, for the first time since 1998, an Ivy League team won a game in the NCAA tournament. For some schools, a win in the tourney's opening round is expected, but for the Cornell Big Red, today's trampling of Temple was huge.

Many predicted that No. 12 Cornell would upset the No. 5 ranked Owls, but the Ivy League champions certainly weren't a lock to win. In each of their last two NCAA appearances, the Big Red were knocked out in the opening round, the pressure of playing on a big stage too much for them to handle. Today they came out with a balanced attack, working the ball inside to seven-footer Jeff Foote and allowing senior guard Ryan Wittman to let it fly from behind the three-point line.

Yesterday, No. 3 Georgetown and No. 4 Vanderbilt were both one-and-done, falling to Ohio and Murray State, respectively, while No. 2 Villanova needed OT to defeat No. 15 Robert Morris. Meanwhile, the oft-overlooked Big Red cruised to a double-digit win, 78-65.

Sunday night Cornell will face the No. 4 ranked Wisconsin Badgers, who barely avoided getting upset by No. 13 Wofford this afternoon. Join me and fellow Cornell alums at Harry Caray's Tavern in Wrigleyville for the game. Time TBA.

Go Big Red!
