When ESPN The Magazine announced they'd be releasing a "Body Issue" featuring famous athletes in various states of undress, my first thought was of Anna Kournikova, Leryn Franco, Amanda Beard and a bevy of other sporting beauties posing on a beach a la Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Edition.
Instead I got Zdeno Chara's left butt cheek.
Turns out the magazine isn't just scantily clad women in exotic locales. In addition to traditional "hot bodied" stars like Serena Williams and MMA star Gina Carano, there's also a 350-pound sumo wrestler, a pregnant softball player, a motocross star and even a 112-pound jockey.
Hey, Sex Sells! Who Knew?!
The mag was expected to be a big hit on newsstands, but according to ESPN Publishing's general manager and editorial director Gary Hoenig, who spoke at the Magazine Innovation Summit in New York on Thursday, the issue has accomplished even more.

ESPN's Insider--the paid content arm of the ESPN the Magazine Web site--saw 400 new subscribers within hours of the Body Issue content being posted online.Let's just hope a bunch of other publications don't catch wind of ESPN's profit and decide to do a "Bodies" issue of their own. I don't think I could handle seeing Glenn Beck's bare ass on the cover of TIME magazine.
Since ESPN Insider subs cost $39.95 a pop, after some quick, unofficial math one could assume the publisher hauled in close to $16,000 in just one day. That's not too shabby.

How about the close-up of the surfer's cracked, crumbling heel. Yummy.
