The New Wonderlic Test Every NFL Player Should Take.....
About this time every year as NFL teams prepare for the draft next month, the most hyped written exam in history is always a hot button issue on talk radio. The wonderlic test is a twelve-minute, fifty question test used to assess the aptitude of prospective NFL players in areas like problem solving and arithmetic. Results have varied throughout the years and the debate rages on if a good score on the wonderlic makes you a better NFL prospect.
The most popular wonderlic scores come from the quarterback position. On average, a quarterback will score a 24 on the test, and since there is no exact science behind which scores means what to a players' career...there have been mixed results. For example Dan Marino and Vince Young share the same score of 15 on the test but you cannot compare the success of their respective careers.
However in the current state of the NFL, rather than testing the players on math and learning....let's change the questions on the wonderlic test to ones that really matter to NFL players.
Using an example from a 2009 wonderlic test....here are some sample questions:
1. Look at the row of numbers below. What number should come next?
8 4 2 1 1/2 1/4 ___?
2. Assumes the first two statements are true. Is the final one:
A. True B. False C. Not Certain
"The boy plays baseball."
" All baseball players wear hats."
"The boy wears a hat."
3. The ninth month of the year is:
A. October B. January C. June D. September E. May
Now you may look at those questions and say "how dumb could these guys be?" You are not the only one thinking players miss these types of questions on a test and make millions of dollars yet I am in a dead end job making nothing in a bad economy. You are not the only one hating driving that 95 Taurus with bad heat thinking I am so broke while nimrods who do not know the ninth month of the year get rewarded with million dollar contracts and drive Bentleys.
As simple as this test may seem from the examples above, here's some of my suggestions to change up the wonderlic test which could benefit not only teams, but the player minds themselves.
1. When a woman says "Please do not touch me like that," your reaction should be:
A. Continue to pursue the woman
B. Make sure she knows who you are and how thankful they should be to be near you
C. Buy her another round of lemon drop shots
D. Stop what you're doing and leave the woman alone
2. Steroids are:
A. Candy
B. Vitamins
C. Used by everyone, so I can use them too
D. Harmful to your body and illegal
3. When are you allowed to carry a gun into a public venue (i.e. club)?
A. Never
B. Only if the bouncer clears you to
C. All the time, it's cool to carry guns
D. Sometimes, only when wearing my Buckle jeans
4. Drinking and driving is considered:
A. Aight!
B. Tight!
C. OK as long as I do not drink more than ten Vodka & Red Bulls
D. Not a good idea because I could kill someone going to the next club
To all the NFL scouts and front offices, you are welcome. This type of test will really test the knowledge and problem solving of a potential NFL athlete because these types of questions deal with situations they may encounter during their NFL career. These types of questions will show judgement skills more than any "what number should come next" question will ever reveal.
With all the money and fame these athletes make, the biggest problem with the league is the stupidity of the players' actions off the field. I understand that they have seminars for rookies and public speakers come in and talk about the problems they may face in their future. However listening and comprehending are two separate things because no matter how many times you may tell a person not to drink and drive (for example), they are probably going to do it at some point in their life.
The NFL should stop wasting all this money on a "book smarts" test and really should start investing in how much "street smarts" these players actually have. Teaching lessons on what to do and what not to do and testing will not only decrease the number of incidents involving players, but it will be a reality check for some up and coming players who have dealt with these issues in the past.
Instead of thinking what is 2+2.....let's think about life.

5. If you are driving your Lambo up the Edens expressway and may have consumed too much alcohol that evening, should you:
A: get off at the next exit, call a tow truck and get towed home (because you have millions of dollars)
B: hire a personal driver to take you anywhere you want to go at any time, allowing you to drink as much alcohol as you want (because you have millions of dollars
C: crash Lambo into Devon Avenue sign, then run away to avoid DUI prosecution
D: take Lambo up to 88mph and hope it's got a flux capacitor to transport you back in time to right before you decided to drink and drive

Like it. Except that (D.) doesn't exist in the minds of professional footballers.
