LET THE BIDDING BEGIN!!!

The search is on for the next victim head coach of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.  Yesterday it was made official that the Irish will no longer be headed by Charlie Weis after a five year run at the university finishing with a record of 35-27 and a ton of unfulfilled expectations.

That is what Notre Dame has a problem with however.  Expectations.
In his press conference yesterday, Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick said this:

"It is a job in which people understand the potential that is here to return Notre Dame to a position of prominence in college football, and I am excited to embark full bore on the process of finding the right next successor to the legacy of Rockne and Leahy and Parseghian and Holtz."

Those four head coaches all together collected seven national titles for the program, and I think we can all admit that the sport of college football has changed dramatically since the days of those four Irish football legends.

The problem is the University of Notre Dame has not changed with the times.  Therefore no matter who the Irish select as their new head coach, these aspirations will be indeed pipe dreams at best.

It's real tough to have expectations of national title glory when the best athletes you can recruit cannot make the grade.  Let's face it, most of the top talent in college football aren't exactly too bright.  That is why other schools have lowered the standards of academics with athletes to boost the talent level of their football program.  The argument of academic standards are only one aspect that Notre Dame has not adjusted to.  There are many many more!!

Student athletes need something to attract them to a school more than an education.  Kids who play football in high schools aren't concerned with a college education, they are concerned with the best opportunity to get that big contract in the NFL.

Kids today care less about geometry and chemistry and more about hot chicks and location.

How can you sell a kid who lives in Amarillo, Texas that South Bend, Indiana is a better place to play college football than LA?  Seriously, what is so attractive about South Bend, IN?

Go here to see the attractions of South Bend

1. Howard Park Ice Rink!
2. Morris Performing Arts Center
3. Potawotomi Zoo
4. College Football Hall Of Fame
5. A Kick Ass Dairy Queen Near The University!!!

I do not know if you've noticed, but Notre Dame is not the only team on national TV anymore.  Shhhh....don't tell that to the Irish.  With ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Deportes, ESPN8 "The Ocho", CBS, ABC, FOX, Fox Sports, Comcast Sportsnet, etc......every team in the country is on television.  Plus with all the sources now on the internet for information/video/stats/bios/etc.....every NFL team scout can find you.

The attraction Notre Dame has used in the past that every game is on national television is no longer any good.  You can see anyone, anytime, anywhere...ON DEMAND!

Although I understand that as a football program, you want to have the highest expectations for your program.  No matter the head coach, the reality is it will never happen.  There are too many factors that hold back any coach of getting the best athletes available at the University of Notre Dame.

So to Coach _____ ______, good luck to you.  You will be fired too because Notre Dame chooses to live in the past rather than the now.
