As I recover from my Bears/Eagles hangover from Sunday night, I've found myself becoming not so much upset and the Bears themselves or the coaching staff. I do not know if it's the constant over-reacting by Bears fans every week or whatever, but I am becoming less and less a fan of Bear fans. Not to say that Bear fans shouldn't expect great things of this team, but sometimes I think Bear fans need to be a little more realistic and less ignorant.
So here's my guide for the later type of Bears fan. Here are seven things that you (as Bear fans) should really understand about this team and just get used to the idea for the remainder of the season.
Seven Things Chicago Bears Fans Must Understand About 2009....
1. Lovie Smith will be the Bears Head Coach for the remainder of the season and next year as well.
With the ownership in it's current state, the McCaskey family is not one to eat salary when it comes to head coaches. Lovie Smith is the best head coach the franchise has had since the beloved Mike Ditka, and his success in Chicago warrants him an opportunity to work with Jerry Angelo to build a better roster around Jay Cutler. I agree taking on the defensive play calling may put more pressure on Lovie to perform, but you cannot start from scratch and eat contracts of an entire coaching staff all at the same time.
2. Jerry Angelo will remain the General Manager for the remainder of the season and next year as well.
Is there an echo in here? I find it funny in a town like Chicago that a man goes from hero one day to enemy the next. Although his draft history has had some hits and many misses, only the elite teams in the NFL do not miss that often. However, there are few elite teams in this current era of parody. The sooner Bear fans realize that this is a rebuilding type of year, the sooner the anger over Jerry Angelo goes away.
3. Jay Cutler is the new girlfriend of Chicago Bear fans.
Hear me out on this, and men will understand this more than women. Sometimes you love your girl except when she demands something of you. Relationships are all about love/hate and moving through the tough times. All Bear fans will admit Jay Cutler has the skills to be something special and you love that. The big interception games where the Bears end with a "L" in the loss column...you hate those. When Jay Cutler was traded to the Chicago Bears, you loved it! When Jay Cutler overthrows three balls and losses the game in the end, you want him gone and are calling for Kyle Orton back. Jay Cutler is Chicago's new girlfriend, although there are bumps in the road you will eventually love him in the end.
4. Without Brian Urlacher, this defense doesn't play as good as it should.
No amount of Jay Cutler interceptions can match the impact of Brian Urlacher's injury on this Chicago Bears team. Remember this was the first season in a long time where Urlacher did not have to rehab an injury in the off season and came into training camp at 100%. Hunter Hillenmeyer (Vanderbuilt) and Nick Roach (Northwestern) may have more brains, but not nearly the physical ability or leadership that Brian Urlacher owns. Hence, the reason why the defense has struggled with a scheme built around the MLB position.
5. Any running game is a product of its offensive line play.
Matt Forte is not having a sophomore slump, he has no holes to run through. Who knew we would be praising the likes of John Tait, John St. Clair and Terrence Metcalf. When you have more than 50% of a new offensive line to start the year from the previous, you are going to have problems in the running game. We always bring up the fact that a QB who goes from offensive co-coordinator to offensive co-coordinator will struggle with the new scheme. It's the same argument for three guys who have never played with one another on the line, especially when two of those three have five starts collectively in their career. So save the Kahlil Bell love for another brain dead sap to latch onto.
6. The McCaskey's aren't selling anytime soon.
When you have a franchise that is worth over a BILLION dollars, which sells out every game and your merchandise is always in the top ten of the league....why sell? They are not going anywhere because the line for season tickets grows longer and longer no matter how bad the team may be.
7. The proven head coach doesn't want to coach here.
I know this may be weird to say and disheartening to some, but no big name head coach wants the job of leading the Chicago Bears. We always say that no big name, proven winner free agent wants to play for the Bulls because they have to play in the shadow of Michael Jordan. In Chicago, we put our Bears legends up with the gods of mythology. What proven head coach wants to live in the shadow of Coach Ditka? What proven running back want to live in the shadow of Walter Payton? As fans we hold up every Bears team to a team that went 15-1 and rolled in Super Bowl XX. If they struggle just the slightest, it's time to assassinate someone. What coach who has been to the pinnacle of the NFL wants that kind of pressure?
I've always believed that as fans we allow our emotions boil over during struggle and but are shy to show them in success. Just because the main piece of the puzzle is here and the struggles have worsened doesn't mean a reprieve is not in order. In other words, let's see what we have for the foreseeable future with our depth and move on from this season because there are better days ahead.
