Remember when you were a kid and you dreamed of being the next sports superstar? No matter what the team or sport, you wanted to be the next big thing. The next Barry Bonds, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, or even Pele!
When you were that age it was all about the love of the game and all the other stuff that came along with it was just icing on the cake.
Few of us get to live that dream and maybe that is a good thing, because no one wants to see 275 pound guys try to hit a baseball or deke around a double team. It's just not a pretty sight and the risk of injury would be so high that contracts would not be nearly worth the money they are today.
However as the dream fades to black as we age, we become more critical of athletes and everything they do on and off the field. The one perk about being an athlete which always strikes me the worst is how they are treated differently the everyday guy.
When Winning Is More Important Than Life......
Last Saturday morning police were called to the residence of Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera where there was an alleged physical altercation with Cabrera's wife. No charges were filed however Cabrera who was extremely intoxicated, proved his intoxicated self by registering a .260 blood alcohol level with is three times the legal limit.
Cabrera was taken to Birmingham police headquarters where Tigers' General Manager Dave Dombrowski picked him up so that Cabrera could play in the Tigers crucial game vs. the White Sox later that night.
Why do athletes get preferential treatment no matter what the crime is?
I understand that Cabrera's contract is the highest in Detroit Tigers history, and I understand that his .323 batting average, 33 home runs and 101 RBI's is the main source of the Tigers' offense.
However, he is still a human being no matter what his bank account may say.
Look at your own situation for example. Say you come home at 6am drunk as a skunk and hit your girlfriend/spouse where as police are called to your home and register you with any number over the legal limit. Do you still have a job come the following morning?
How about your boss picking you up from jail? Would your boss make the drive and bail you out?
I do not know of one profession other than sports and celebrity where this would happen. It's sad that sports organizations seem to disregard what is important for the bottom line. When a front office is more concerned about having their star player on the field as opposed to making sure all is alight with his personal life, that is a problem.
It doesn't shed a good light on baseball when players get preferential treatment when it comes to off the field matters. If you or I had this happen in our lives, we would be dismissed of the next day. We would not have a job anymore and probably would be going jail for sometime.
Just because athletes make a lot of money not only for themselves but also for their franchise should not make them any different from you or I.
The fact that organizations get on their knees and give millions of dollars to players and then turn into their personal babysitters is outright disgusting
The Tigers should be more worried why their superstar was even out that late to begin with. If winning is so important to the organization where they have to bail out their own player, they should let Cabrera know they feel that way. Obviously winning is not too important to Cabrera or else he wouldn't be out partying till dawn with a big game on the horizon. .
In the end, shame on the Detroit Tigers and Dave Dombrowski specifically for allowing this incident to go without punishment. A trip to the postseason is not nearly important than what happens in reality.
