The Wall Street Journal reports that wealthy women prfer buyingproperty to any other kind of investment, whereas men tend more towards stocks. They find it more enjoyable and more stable. 34 % of wealthy women also invest in real estate through funds.
A lot of the comments seem driven by the fact that women like pretty things and decorating their houses, but I'm not sure that's the main reason for this. I think women tend to like the concreteness of real estate- you can touch and feel and see it, it's not just an imaginary number or piece of paper that declares your percent interest. And you feel like maybey ou have a little more control over it because it is tangible.
Most investors expect their real estate holdings to increase in value over the next two years, which kind of seems like a foregone conclusion, since the only way prices can really go from here is up. It's unlikely that you'll invest in a piece of real estate that will evenutally be worth nothing or next to nothing, which is different from stocks and bonds. Maybe that's another reason women like it.
I also wonder how this breaks down in terms of residential vs. commercial real estate, as I imagine some of the funds are going to invest in REITs or other pools that go towards buying retail, office or industrial properties. Those kinds of investments are two different animals and I'd be interested to see how that breaks down by gender.
And overall, I wish I had enough money to worry about where I was investing it.
