A recent commentary on the National Association of Realtors website indicates that most homeowners or potential homeowners are now considering environmental factors when buying a home. 40 percent feel that heating and cooling efficiency is a top factor, while energy efficient appliances and lighting are also high up on the list.
Mentioned but not actually graphed is another important factor: commuting efficiency. As the cost of gas starts to creep up again and commuters are looking to save money and help the environment by living close to work or public transit.
Adding to the buzz about green, 340 on the Park, the Midwest's first LEED-certified residential high-rise, earned the Agents Choice award from Chicago Agent Magazine last week.
The building received the certification because of its unified approach to green. It combined land use, indoor air quality and materieals to take advantage of the central location and earn the certification. Even with the Blue Cross Blue Shield building altering views from the west windows, the building is stunning and I imagine it has great views from all sides.
I'm wondering when green will become standard and we'll have to strive for something even better.

340 On the Park has stunning south facing views. Of course, you pay for them! The east and west facing units - not so good as you might imagine, though east is better than west. North facing isn't too bad. You can find some floor plans here: http://lucidrealty.com/onthepark.php
