Home sweet home... for your pet

There's a lot of considerations that go into buying or leasing a new place that are complicated when you have a pet. Here's a few things you should consider if you're moving somewhere with your furry friend...

1. If you're renting, ask the landlord: some apartment finding services will help you out by screening for pet-friendly apartments. You're probably going to have better luck in a smaller building where neighbors won't be as concerned about density, noise and smell.

2. Find out if there are amenities that will make your pet happier: Yelp and the Chicago Park District have lists of places to take your buddy, if your dog is social. Also, check the area for pet stores or specialty shops before making your decision. Choosing a unit with a yard might be better for a dog.

3. Consider the logistics of getting your pet in and out of your unit: If you work long hours, maybe living on the top floor of a high rise isn't fair to your dog, who will have to wait nervously in an elevator to go to the bathroom. Some buildings have certain elevators specifically for dogs and you aren't allowed to have the dogs in any other elevator- if that bothers you, maybe look for another building.

4. Think about the finishes in your unit: Pet hair (and smell) tends to stay in carpet, but you might be able to sweep it off of hard wood. Maybe stay away from porous surfaces if your pet tends to have accidents.

5. Think about the daylighting in your space: I always feel bad for pets who live in basements and don't get to see the sun much during our Chicago winters. They're shorter than us and don't have the benefit of seeing out of high up windows!
