Magellan Development held a press conference this weekend to show off their six-charger electric car station that can hold up to 24 cars. This is the first station in the Midwest to be open to the public. The chargers looks like this:
Seems like a small issue today, maybe even a big expense for the relatively small number of people who could actually use it, but think about it. Now, people will pass on a condo because they can't get deeded parking with it. I also know people who will choose where they live partially based on whether or not it has a Zip Car or I-GO Car Sharing associated with it. If you do have an electric car, you're unlikely to live in a single family home because of the wasted energy and, in many cases, increased distance to work. So the chargers seem like a great value-add idea for the future.
Plus, Da Mayor was there to help install them. Great PR.
Next step? Let's get a few chargers installed in more heavy car traffice areas.

Thanks for the mention -- although, please note it's "I-GO Car Sharing," not "Go Car." We provided the main demo vehicle for the event: a plug-in electric Prius. I-GO has two of these highly sophisticated cars in its fleet and plans to add many more.
I shot some video of this event, too: http://www.vimeo.com/7158058
Mayor Daley also used the opportunity to talk about the $15 million in Clean Cities grant funding that Chicago received from the Dept. of Energy. We're a partner in that endeavor, and hope to work with Carbon Day Automotive on implementing the ChargePoint station usage throughout the metro area, as it pertains to car-sharing members accessing it with our plug-in cars.
