Twitter lists making tweeting better, easier

Not since that Chinese restaurant on "Seinfeld" put Elaine Benes on its list have lists generated so much buzz.

Granted, that was the do not deliver list, but Twitter's new list feature could--make that will--revolutionize the service.

One of the biggest complaints up until now about Twitter was its unfriendly system of keeping track of people.

Case in point, as the guy behind @redeyechicago and its nearly 16,000 followers, I miss a lot of important tweets simply because I can't keep up with them.

Lists changes all that but does so much more. Here are four ways to get something out of lists quickly.
Create a group
Check out twitter.com/redeyechicago now and you'll see three lists: One for RedEye staff, one for national and world news and one for Chicago news. Now, when I want to see what the major news organizations in Chicago are tweeting about, I just click on the list. And because the list contains just 23 feeds, it's much easier to manage. Speaking of managing, I can add to or delete from the list at any time.

Instant recommendations
Any Twitter users--whether they are following you or not--can subscribe to your lists. So if I create a list of the 50 coolest people to follow on Twitter and someone who trusts my judgment wants to subscribe to that list, they can.

No follow, no problem
You don't have to follow everyone on a Twitter list to see their tweets. So you could create a list of people that you don't want to officially follow and still keep track of them. The difference? Not following someone means their tweets don't show up in your main feed. So if someone tweets too much or you don't want anyone to know that you follow Ashton Kutcher, lists can be a huge help.

Event planner
Give your followers a little help by creating specific lists for specific events. Whether it's an election list or a holiday-themed list or a list associated with a tweetup you're planning, you could give one-click advice to 50 people or 50,000 people in no time.

If you want to get into lists, start at listorious.com, a site that focuses on recommending the most follow-worthy Twitter lists. And considering lists just launched, the site has plenty to offer.

Are you following my list? Do you have a list idea? Tweet me, poke me--just tell me.
