Facebook FINALLY addresses account unavailable/site maintenance issue

Been working for me (and the ChicagoNow Facebook page) all day.

ive been getting the site maintenance message since sunday morning. i emailed fbook but no reply...shocking!

Yep - unavailable since Sunday morning. Sent an email to FB, no response. Apparently no way to speak to a person if you contact their HQ. Rumor has it that a server or group of servers are down; however, this has not been confirmed by FB. I started a new account, but would prefer my old one back!

I am one of the unlucky one....been getting the "site maintenance since Sat. evening 10/3. Emailed FB several times and gotten no reply....all they have to do is put something up saying they're aware of the situation and trying to get it fixed....but NOTHING!!! I want to SCREAM!!!

I am having the same issue with account unavailable since Sunday morning. Trying to find someone to email at Facebook was challenging. I finally emailed the abuse email address and have been doing so every 12 hours and have not received a single response.

yep down here in michigan since saturday 10/3 also no word from facebook regardless of the 100 messages that i have sent them...... think its gone forever and they don't know how to tell us.. no matter what the lack of communication from FB has defiantly tarnished their reputation....... i wont start a new account not with someone who refuses to let their users know what is going on when there are problems.........

I'm in Virginia and I'm paddling up the same creek. It happened sometime Sunday morning and I've had all my friends that I'm able to contact report it using the specific help topic "friend's page not viewable". Yeah, we all know what you get when you send a message to FB, a robo-message saying they can't respond to every bug report but they do read them. Uh-huh. I'll just go take a nap for a few days and hope my social network hasn't died.

I'm in NY and have been out since Sunday morning also..have sent many emails and phone calls that they do not answer. Very very frustrating. Like others, I've invested allot of time in the games that they offer, that you can not now get into because our accts on facebook are unavailable. Sure hope they fix it soon. I'm really thinking that a server went down, being in the IT industry myself, but they should tell us that, no?

also in NY(down since sunday morning)...seems to be a widespread problem although no one else i know is having this issue. i really do not want to create another one and lose all the info i have saved there! since facebook isn't listening is there someone else we can contact to help us get this problem solved.

From Texas...also been down since early Sunday morning....sent 6 separate emails regarding it to the help center....nothing. That's a good way to take care of your customers...shall we all just rally around the concept of another networking venue and ditch Facebook....

From Texas as well. Mine has been down since Saturday night. Its crazy. My farmtown is probably gonna wilt haha. I was wondering if I was the only one with this issue. But I guess there are are a lot.

Scott, I do appreciate the reporting on this, as well. I, too, have been searching for other users experiencing the same problem but couldn't find anything current.

Personally, I think it's an insidious plot by Facebook to show us feel what the world would be like without it. Then, when they announce a new fee for service we won't object as much as we might have before the sabotage! Okay, I'm not that paranoid, but it has made me realize how much of my socializing occurs on-line nowadays. When on when will my Facebook profile be freed? I'll pay any amount of ransom at this point!

Scott - Sending you kudos from North Carolina for sharing the outage information. I've been unable to access fb since Sat evening. Finally a google search got me to your site and your information. Just your tidbit makes the waiting easier! :)

I am in Iowa and haven't been able to log on to FB since Saturday night either. It is super frustrating...as I am one of "those people" that log on at least once a day to keep in touch w/family and friends. It's SUPER frustrating that you aren't able to get an actual Customer Service person when you call FB for help- let alone they don't reply to any type of e-mail. This blog has been really helpful though- letting me know I'm not in this alone!

Also, my husband IS able to log into his FB account, and when he clicks on my name/profile it gives him a message that says my profile is unavailable...so nobody is even able to send me msgs or look at my photos etc. on my profile while FB is doing "maintenance".

I'm from Maui and I too have not been able to log into my account since saturday evening. It's irritating as hell! They seriously need to get it together and get it poppin'! I need my FARMVILLE! LOL. But seriously though, C'MON FACEBOOK!!!

Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii! I have not been able to access facebook since early Sunday morning 10/04 which happened to also be my birthday. I tried fb for support- there is none. I now realize how totally inreliable this service is. Thanks for getting the word out.

I'm from the UK and i've been having this problem from last night. I hope its up and running soon I cant imagine having to go all day without it. I was going mad last night! I hope I don't have to wait 3-4 or more days for them to fix the problem.
I've checked with other friends and they can get onto there profiles. When they click on mine though it says this profile is unavailable at the moment!
I'm a facebook addict and i would like it up as soon as possible.

Near Seattle here, and mine went down around 11pm PST sat night. I was actually using it and it went all wonky. I haven't been able to log in since, but one of my groups got a message out that I was sent an alert on, so I have hope my account is still actually there somewhere.

am from nigeria.....am having the same problem..am still wondering why my account of people...since saturday night...scott thank u so much cos i really tot i was the only one. but something weird happened as i was typing this now...i got an email notification from facebook on someone commenting on my wall....but is still cant log into my account....is it a good sign they are working on it? i think it is cos i wasn't getting any email notification since this problem started cause no could log into my account.

Still down here too, some 72+ hours since I first noticed the problem.

It's disappointing to see Facebook's blog still fails to acknowledge this - all we have is a wall post that most users won't find by themselves, and a couple of sentences on the help page that many users will skim past without even noticing. Just a degree of transparency towards the users who keep them in business might be in order...

One of my co-workers actually had issues with facebook, although, I'm not sure she was actually aware of it, until we left her random messages of 'where's your photo?'

Her profile came back within a few minutes. but her name and photo were gone during the little ordeal.

It's nice to know I'm not alone and that help may be on the way. My problems started Saturday night with some of my items missing and not processing my games, etc. When I tried to log in Sunday, I have the "under site maintenance" error. I thought I had a virus from the trying to download a Facebook Layout. I live in Idaho.

Mine has been out since at least 6 am on Sunday, Oct. 4th! It is beyond frusterating! I wish they could at least update us as to what is going on. The little sentence now was better than nothing, but more info would be great! Maybe it should be on the news, that would put them on it quickly (or at least you would hope!). My friends say they can't access my page to even post anything on my wall. I hope to see some people on here who might be getting access to their site soon...at least it would be progress.

It's been 4 days and counting now since I've been able to log onto facebook. I'm sure my friends miss me, but they're carrying on with their facebook lives without me! Almost as if I was never even there. Is this what it will be like when I die? ;)

I am in Illinois and I am still getting the site maintenance error. Been getting it since 10/4/09.

I am in Northern Virginia - been out since Saturday, 10/3. I e-mailed the help-less desk twice. I did get a generic reply from them asking for a screen shot. Replied as asked. Nothing back. The second e-mail was not answered...but by then, I'm sure they got the hint with the help of all who e-mailed having the same problem. Maaaaybe tomorrow we are back on. It would take me forever to re-establish my network of friends.

Hey, I'm not sure if anyone tried this or not, I only did it for the sake that if my account really couldn't get back on normally, I'd want to know if I can use the same email for a new one. Since the problem isn't fixed yet, I thought it doesn't hurt to try. Guess what I found~ you know you could actually use your "unavailable-account-email" to register for another new one.
I thought it'll popup the message to tell me that this email's existed already, but no, it actually went through and sent an email to me to have me confirm it...
Don't know what to say, now I start to worry if I really could get my old one back, what'll happen if they really fix the problem and I got this double account on the same email issue??!! (sigh~)

cc, i am worried about the same thing...think of all the work it would take to get our accounts back to where they were. I tried the same thing and my email was available as well. I'm in Dallas and I haven't been able to log in since Saturday. I'm a little upset about the "generic" response that facebook gave us. They should keep us updated in detail. All I have to say is...this is taking waaaaaayyyyy too long! I just hope and pray that all of our accounts are the way they were when we left! (sigh)

since facebook is a business...a billion-dollar business...we should all file a complaint with the better business bureau. let them know how unhappy we are it took 3-4 days for them to make a statement about this issue. not to mention the countless unanswered emails.

shasta81, yeah, it's very depressing when I found that out... but I should've put a reminder in my last comment to warn you not to do the same I did though... (and to kzeesdesint too) I didn't do it on purpose, I was expecting the warning on "the email's been used" or something like that... but when it asks me to put in the string words or the check words thing, I was wondering if that warning's gonna show later on the next page or not, but then figured that's not the case. I was going to stop there if I knew that's the point where I'll be register successfully after that click.
I actually regreted doing so, cause I know that's not gonna help with the current fraustration we're facing now.

And no, I didn't confirm the registration, as soon as I checked the email and got the confirmation mail sent from FB, I didn't proceed anything, like I said, I didn't mean to complicate the whole situation. I did use the email and try to log back in to FB again, but got the same "Account Unavailable" message. (which could probably count as a relief, maybe?)

****SO PLEASE, if you've read my last comment and this one, don't go and try to creat a new account under the same email you're using on Facebook... I don't know what'll happen when they finally fix (or not) the problem. ****

Wow, still no access. It took almost 3 days to get a statement that there was a problem, then a statement saying 24 hours to resolve the issue, and here is another 24 hours and still cannot access with no update from FB. Unbelievable.

Well, I'm out in Boston. No FB since Sunday and it isn't back today. I hesitate to open a new account with a different email address, re-friend everyone and start from scratch but if this keeps up for a few more days, I guess that's what I'll do, but, this has been an incredibly crappy "user experience."

This is day 5 for me as well. Just tried again, being that the latest update said they should have it resolved in 24 hours. Still nothing! So frustrating! I almost missed dinner gathering with old coworkers because the address was in facebook! Luckily, it seems your friends can still send you messages. I was checking my regular email and saw a facebook message asking why I wasn't at the dinner so I was able to go after all. I guess I'll just have to keep checking like everyone else. Really hope this is resolved soon!

The one thing I can do is access Facebook on my iPhone but I can't post status or see my photos. I can't IM but I can post to friends walls and comment on their status posts. I feel like a kid locked out of the playground ....

Facebook has been doing maintenance on my account since Saturday- 5 days without! There IS life after fb...

NOT that I expect any magical response, but I sent this comment to FB on 10-08--09 via the FB Help Center known bugs page: "STILL getting site maintenance message, since late Saturday, Oct. 3/ early Sunday, Oct 4. Current date/time: Thursday, Oct. 8, 8:52 am EDT. From what little "news" can be gleaned from the internet, there is a big problem with the particular server on which my data unfortunately sits. I hope that FB is actually addressing this & not just waiting til someone comes back from vacation to fix it. Also, for what it's worth, FB could and SHOULD do a much better job about their public relations and customer support. When there is an issue that goes beyond "a few hours," then get out a press release and send emails to the affected accounts to acknowledge the problem and what is being done to address it. And, another thought... what IF FB can't fix the current problem... how and when would the account holders know?"

My husband, also off since Saturday, 10/3, got his account back just a few minutes ago. Mine still has not been released by FB though. BUT, now you can see my profile picture when searching for me, which is different than how it has been the last few days. I have created a new account with a new e-mail address, but maybe this is moving in the right direction, at least for some.

I am also down since 10/3. I am from Brooklyn, New York. I have created a group about the issue, and hope all of you will join, and pass the words to your friends. Still down here, after 100+ hours since I first noticed I couldn't get into my account (and more than 24 hours after the promise of a fix - but then to be honest I was expecting that, the same way I fully expect it still won't be working in another 24 hours). I realise now that in the last day or so that my account was available, I saw the precursor of this failure in a friend's account (whose comments suddenly had no name, picture or profile link and appeared as strays in my news feed). I am not sure I subscribe to the theory that this outage is as small as Facebook would have us believe, to be honest - I think it's affecting a fairly sizeable chunk of their users, as the odds of knowing somebody else who's affected would otherwise be miniscule, and we have multiple reports of that. My guess would be in the thousands to tens of thousands affected.

Incidentally, my guess refers to active, daily Facebook users. I'm familiar with their claimed "300 million" users, and I personally don't believe once the spambots and idle-for-months-at-a-time accounts are deleted, they've got even a quarter of their claimed figure. (Total net use is estimated at around a billion people, and it simply doesn't make sense to believe that one in three globally are on Facebook. Even in their strongest market (the US), I don't know that I'd believe one in three internet users were regular Facebook users.

One further aside: This experience - mostly thanks to their complete lack of transparency and the fact they aren't providing any real updates - has soured me on Facebook badly. Even if my account comes back (and I think that's a very big *if* at this point), I doubt I'll be using it anywhere near as much as I once did. If it doesn't come back, there's pretty much zero chance I'll ever consider signing up again.

This site maintenance is horrible! I am glad I found this website, it makes me feel as though I am not alone. I am however the only one from my group of immediate friends that this is happening to. Saturday evening was my last log in. I didn't realize how addicted I was to fb until I didn't have it :/ The good thing is IF my account never works again I WILL NOT sign up a second time...I am starting to understand how to live life w/o it once again! LOL

For those of you who were lucky enough to get your account back...was everything the same or was there content missing? I haven't gotten mine back yet....tho I have to say this little experience has made me far more productive! Still annoyed as anything that I've been out since Saturday! I am almost dont believe I will ever see the inside of my Facebook account again.... And the biggest disappointment is to see my kids log on to their accounts with no problems whatsoever.... Have I done something to deserve this?????

day 6 since i have been logged in and able to play mafia wars. really pissed that all my progress is basically flushed down the toilet. wish i would have held out on getting a facebook account in the first place. i knew it was evil.

BTW, if you start a new account with a different e-mail address and do a search for your old account you might not be there. I did a search for myself trying to at least locate my old account hoping it said "account unavailable" but NO....my account did not exist. I am getting really worried that my account has been totally wiped out and not just "unavailable" Anyone else's account a total ghost like mine or is everyone's else's that's down just visible but "unavailable"? I do not have the energy to sync up with 200 people again. I won't start again on FB. Then all my friends will think I cancelled my FB account and went underground which isn't the worst thing ever to happen but I'd rather not have them think I went awal!!!

I have not been able to log into facebook since saturday and just like everyone else i have emailed called and left messages and no response. and yes all my family can log into their accounts no problem. i am very frustrated and what do we get from facebook WE ARE WORKING ON IT.... it has taken me 2 years to build my page and now what. do i have to start all over again? i feel better to be able to post something somewhere but the only people that will read this is the same ones that are just as frustrated as me. good luck everyone. it is lonely here in harrisburg pa without facebook

I thought I was dealing with not getting onto facebook better today until I got home and as I turned on the lab top I started getting hopeful. I came here first for news and saw some people have been getting back on. I got even more hopefully, surely I deserved to be one of the lucky few who are finally able to get on. Anticipation......excitment............and.........NOTHING.....now I'm just as angry and upset and frustrated as ever if not more so. When are we going to catch a break?

Sarah I feel the same way. I too came home from work look here first and saw some hope only to crushed again with same old message. No news from facebook again! no idea if the problem will be fixed.... I am afraid that they don't even know what the problem is, I have seen post were it has been described as site maintenance, database problems, and now a bug...... I am so frustrated and darn right out mad.

This may be off topi but this is kinda funny, I have a co-worker that has been like chasing me in levels on farmville.. I know stupid reason to be upset over not being allowed back in. but what's funny is that he has sold all his decorations and planted nothing but fields so he can gain more points form more plots in an attempt to pass me up in levels while he knows that i can not do anything..... LOL well not lol even that is pissing me off now..........

This is totally frustrating.

It is super frustrating! My family thinks I've fallen off the face of the earth! So annoying.....I'm hoping they figure it out b/c all my friends/family are able to get into their accounts....it's just crap! I feel so out of the loop with my of out of town friends/family. I still cannot get on FB. I keep getting email updates from posts friends have made after me. I also am now getting emails from Farm Town (never got them before) that my sister worked at my farm. the email it comes from is (apps+z9c=a6c9@facebookappmail.com). The email wants me to "click here" and help her out...Haven't done it. Feel like it is a phishing scam. Anyone else had this?

Now don't keel over anyone, but Facebook has finally updated something! The error message a lot of us get when attempting to log in. They've also provided a link to their oh-so-handy help page so you can stay updated-- that's the page that showed absolutely nothing about the error until three days into the issue (and has not changed in that time). And, of course, there's the better-late-than-never apology at the end. I guess that's what we get in lieu of an actual response email to our issue because, of course, you can't expect them to answer EVERYONE's email since, as so many kind and considerate individuals have pointed out, it's a free service. Which, I gather, means you should expect nothing from them. I've seen a lot of people suggest that paying for this feature would somehow guarantee a higher level of service/dependability but, seriously, we've all dealt with cable/phone/utility/etc companies. All it guarantees is more money in their pockets. I imagine these same helpful individuals are either Facebook employees themselves or the apathetic service reps you get at other companies. But, since it's free, we should be grateful to Facebook for providing this service out of the goodness of their hearts, right? What a joke. They make money from this service, otherwise there would be NO service. Whether or not we're actually handing them our money has little bearing on the matter-- If we go, their money goes with us because advertisers don't pay for ad time/space when no one is watching.

And to top it off, there's loads of people with nothing more important to say than "It's free" or "You're either a loser or stupid for complaining about this". My business isn't on FB (nor will it ever be after this) but I certainly utilize it to stay in contact with friends/family. Obviously it's not my sole contact with these people but having a social networking service like this makes it a great deal easier to have more frequent contact with them than I otherwise would have, working a full-time job, raising a kid, dealing with day-to-day hectic life.

So for all of you argumentative twits with nothing more helpful to say, take a lesson from Thumper and shut the hell up. As for Facebook-- Get talking or your users will talk elsewhere. Honestly, after this fiasco, I'm looking forward to the next networking site that everyone gravitates to.

okkkk....there's an update on problem...when u try to log in. so am confident again. atleast they did not neglect us. i have confident they will resolve the issue....the problem is dat their name has been dented!!! U guys should cool down ok these things happen...mistake is always...these things are machines...they can break down anytime. Day 6 & I'm annoyed....they admit it's a bug of some sort. With as many users as they have they needed to be more careful so this didn't happen. I got that same message this morning...still no time when it'll be up.

Looking at the numerous Google search results for "Facebook site maintenance" tells me that this is not the first (and likely, not the last!) such occurrence. I do wonder, though... is this October 2009 occurrence the longest-lasting one to date?! Is there a Guinness Book of World Records entry for this?

I was one of the first to find this site and comment and now 7 days later I find myself coming here first and checking out the news before i even try to log into facebook and of-course get the same message... well same message just a different version, but i got to hand it to them they almost got a paragraph going on there.. but reading it is like watching the wizard of ozz, no matter how many times its re-made and re-shown it still ends the same.....

I hate to say this but i do not believe anything that hey have to say now.... they lost my trust a long time ago... If they want me to believe their story then they need to take the initiative to contact a news authority with a news statement describing the problem and what is being done and they need to make viable to EVERYONE, those that can log in and those that can not, and those who are just beginning to think about signing up.. I am tired of them hiding behind the scene... I don't even care how long it will take to fix it i just want to know what it is and what they are doing....

I would really love to see them be a bold enough to post something here on your site in response to all of this. Don't tell me that someone in their Chicago branch office has not seen this blog.. So come on FB come talk to us here... Thanks for the happy Birthdays it made me smile. It's just so hard not having FB. My son is in the military and some of my family live in Australia and this is how I keep up with them....I'm missing them!!!!! But thanks again for the B-day wishes they did make me feel better. Well, I'm into day five of my personal outage (although it's really day six, as the outage almost certainly happened simultaneously for everybody - we just didn't notice it until we next tried to log in).

As I guessed 24 hours ago, I still don't have access to my account some 48 hours after Facebook promised the problem would be resolved in half that time. I do have the shiny new error message, which frankly is a change Facebook should have made within 24 hours of the problem first occurring.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess my account won't be available tomorrow either. In fact, I don't believe it will be working when I try to log in on Monday. I fully expect it to be mid-week before it comes back, if in fact it ever does.

Facebook, I've lost all faith in your abilities.

After going through the hassle of creating a new profile and still not being able to access the original one (I always got the original error message, no special updates)... I SEEM to be back online with the original profile. Some people can see both of my profiles, others can only see the new one, so I am a little skeptical about whether this is the final fix. I'll be keeping both as a safety...

I have been unable to access my page for a week now. I am only one of a multitude. Should I be shocked about the lack of mainstream media coverage regarding this issue? Should I be surprised at how "tight lipped" FB is regarding this? By their non action, they are affirming the sterotype several non FB users hold about their insignificance. Well it is day six for me too! After reading the posts we not only have not being able to access FB in common but there is something else that links all of us. I remember reading a story about hackers being abel to go through the security program AVG. That is what I have and am curious if any on you do as well. Just a thought.

For clarification for Kzees, AVG is an Anti-Virus program, though it's expanded to other Anti's over the years, but primarily when someone say's AVG they are referring to the anti virus program.

OK, I signed up for this group from all the way over here in Seattle, and I too have been blocked since Saturday. Figures my I just joined 2 months ago, to help communicate with my daughter, who is at college. She text me at one point asking if I had deleted her as a friend.

A lot of people are talking about Farmtown, well I am now at level 255 in Mafia Wars, with a family of 770 members. Who knows what shape it will be in, I just hope I don't have to start over because I definately won't. Just got a fresh start in the game because I finished with New York and was enjoying Moscow and Cuba.

Well speaking of Farmville! Just about and hour ago one of my friends called to inform me that I no longer show up on their neighbors list.... up until now throughout this ordeal I was still listed and he told me that several times he went to the farm just to see if crops had died.. when he went to do it this morning he discovered i was gone....... This is NOT good news as it adds to my fear and belife that facebook has dealt with this by simply deleting us..................

Day 7 people!!! My new account is working, but it is really difficult to rebuild after being on for more than a year. Is AVG really a common denominator? I've been running that for years.

I am debating on opening a new account. I'm not at all hopeful at this point. I just don't want to have to open another email account to get another facebook page. I'm not a patient person so the fact that I haven't done this already is pretty amazing. I want to wait it out but not know how long it will be till I have to wait is making it more and more difficult. People are saying that pages are being permanetly deleted. That is very upsetting. I just don't know how long to wait. Of course, if I do end up opening a new account then I'll probably be able to log onto my old account.

I think we should come up with a statement and have our friends who are still on post it on their walls.

Lord knows I see enough wall comments for a cause to "pass on if you agree," one could argue by this time we are a cause....lol

Here's something new: When my daughter logged on using the iPhone app, she could still see parts of my profile including how many friends I have. Today, it shows that I have 0 friends!!! That was the final straw for me and I created a new profile with a different email address. Because I am not totally without hope, I've only sent friend request to close friends and family thinking I might get my old account back. But I have to say, IT IS NOT LOOKING PROMISING.

Thanks for the information Christian. I'll just keep waiting. Maybe it's not a horrible thing. I was pretty addicted to Facebook. I wasn't reading anymore or doing other things, just checking facebook every five minutes and playing farmville or farkle. Of course, I haven't really started reading again because I keep checking and hoping I'll be able to get back onto facebook. And, checking on here for hopeful updates which I'm not getting. I do like knowing I'm not alone and it does help with the frustration. Plus, I know what will and will not work thanks to all of you updating on here with your experiences.

Six days since I noticed my Facebook was down, three days since the promised 24-hour fix, and still no change. No surprise either, though.

And no, AVG is nothing to do with the problem. I don't run AVG here, nor is there any way your virus scanner could be causing this, folks. The problem is 100% on Facebook's end, not caused by anything their users have done. Most likely they have corrupted database(s) on their end, either caused by hardware or software failures - I'm thinking possibly related to the recently publicized anti-spam measures.

Frankly, I no longer believe their claim that no data will be lost. If that were the case, they'd have been able to restore from backups or revert their changes by now. The huge delay in fixing the problem strongly suggests to me that they will have at least some level of permanent data loss.

I have vanished (LOL) after the site maintenance no one can view me in their profile. well i guess it is now time for me to create a new profile which will be a passing annoyance, oh well it is what it is

Been reading this blog for days now and finally decided to commiserate in a post instead of silently. As of today my Pet Society pet is no longer there (was there earlier in the week because my sister was tending it for me). Perhaps my pet saw smoke from my burnt muffins in Yoville and went to check it out or she was iced by my Mafia. Either way, I'm beginning to think my profile is a lost cause. I've been on Myspace more though and started a new mafia. I refuse to start another Facebook profile after this fiasco!!! I'm sure it will take me no time to get back up to level 225 (yeah right).

Me too. I have been on FB for the last 2.5 hours recreating my friend list. It' so good to be able to hear from my friends and family again. I'm not going to bother with any of my profile yet. I'm still hoping my old account will become available.

I have another account already, but I would never use it. It is just a 2nd. I haven't been in touch with no one on Facebook since it went out. I can always call those who live far away more often. It has been now 8 days that I have had no access to my account! FB has not updated any new news about the problem since the middle of last week. They tell us that they are working on the problem and that there is no need to start a new account. well I suppose their fix has worked. judging from the number of post here and the original tread our comments are slowing down in numbers.

The original tread was gaining several post per hour the first half of last week and now has slowed to a few a day. There has only been a few less then 5 posters who have returned to say that their account has been restored. This leads me to believe that 1.) allot of the original posters are back up and are just to busy to come back here and report .... NOT!...... 2.)They have gone on and started a new account.

That is exactly what FB wants in my opinion. By telling us that there is no need to do so they planted that idea in all of our heads. Hoping we will just get involved in rebuilding and wahla their off the hook. The fact that they have NOT directly responded to any email that I or any others have sent and the fact that there is NO new news on the help page where "they" say we can stay informed about this issue since the middle of last week leads me to also believe that our numbers are not significant enough to make any kind of impact on their concern..

They are going on with business creating new aps, developing ways to determine how happy their user base is and of-course creating new languages for facebook Their hope is that we will do the same and just move on.. Our voices are not being heard. Major news sources are not picking up on this..... those that have take the side of facebook and do not demand for their readers any explanation they only report what we already know.. If you want to stay informed of the progress see their help page......... I truly believe that my site will never return.. If it ever does rest assured that i will report that here and then delete my account. If i am not going to use FB it will be on my terms and not theirs...................

and I contacted the local news to see if they would add pressure. My approach to them is that while they may consider this service free, we do pay in non-monetary ways that increase FB's monetary value, and...they have created a communication system on which we now rely on, much like the TV/radio. If the TV/radio service were to go out for over a week, with no explanation, there would be an uproar.

I have been having problems with Facebook for a week now. Last Sunday (Oct 4th) I would get a "site down due to maintenance" error message. I followed their directions and sent a notice to Facebook after the error message lasted for a day or two. Well, it is now Oct 11th and I am loosing faith. When my girlfriend try's to visit my Facebook the page it wont open, when she try's to visit it from he iphone she can only see my info page, no wall page or Photo album. When she tries to send me a message from her iphone she gets a error message. I have known people to be down for 2 to 3 days with site maintenance, but have not heard of this issue lasting for a week or more.. Anyone else out there getting this message for a week or more?

Well dreamer I have a Mac if that helps you. I don't think it is a virus that is causing this. It's Facebok's fault alone. However run your anti virus if it makes you feel better. It can't hurt. I don't think it's a virus. What bugs me is some say they are getting their profiles back. I am just amazed at the scope of the situation. I'm hearing reports that people are being affected in Germany, France, South America, Serbia, Soldiers in Iraq, and Afghanistan. Facebook really has been a real weasel about everything. i'm in greece and have the same problem as all of you. it's really frustrating after a week...if my account is deleted i'd like to know, not wait in the darkness for them to deign and make a statement about the issue.

One thing to keep in mind is that facebook is a free service to users. I'd also be disappointed if I lost my profile and contacts, but seriously in this day and age of technology, just how difficult would it be to recreate it all? It would be extremely courteous of facebook to provide a truthful and realistic update about the issue. If it's time to create a new profile and start rebuilding contacts, let us know.

It should be you who is on the young billionaire list instead of the ceo of Facebook who is clearly too immature to be running a big company. We need people who have learned how to wipe their ass before they can be in charge of the big things.

Thank you for this forum. I am in PA and after googling this FB error (I too have been locked out for 9 days) I have found this site to contain the most information anywhere! I am shocked that this story is not bigger news and really wonder how many people this is effecting. Everyone I have asked is not having a problem. Although the message says not to, I am likely going to create a new account. Right now, I still appear as a friend in my "friends" lists but they cannot access my profile. So it seems to still exist but not really. This is so frustrating...

Scott, thank you for starting this AND for actually updating your story. Even with no official information, it is helpful to read your updates. This is my new facebook.... I come here a few times a day now to see the comments and see if any progress has been made made.. then... I usually go frustrate myself by trying to log into my 'fakebook' account. I have realized I certainly was more attached to facebook than I thought, but I don't think it means I have no life - I think it's a new norm as a way to keep in touch and up to date on many friends/family.
I really don't understand why the national news won't pick this story up and pressure FB for an update on what's really happening.

happy monday (without facebook). i got 2 emails this morning that i was tagged in some pictures. although i cannot log into my account and my friends get a message saying my profile is currently unavailable, i have a bit of hope. hopefully returning to the work week tomorrow and the pressure put on facebook by us and others, we'll have some progress!

This is day 9 for me as well. I'm starting to give up hope that this issue will ever be resolved! This morning was the first time I even bothered to try to access my facebook account in about 3 days. So frustrating :(

Jen --- I attempted to call the number you had listed a few days back for FB...what a joke...it says press 1 for customer service then a recording comes on that no one is available. So why have a number or selection?

On the bright side I've been super productive at work this past week. :) Still annoyed b/c I've been out of the loop for the past week....

I've called WPIX (local news channel) in NYC and spoke to someone there in the news room...they said they'd look into it but who knows....at least it will keep them busy for a few hours..and hopefully get some answers if they can find something.

Ok so called ABC & FOX news as well...was told that they would look into it but if nothing else the word has been spread. I hope someone has news for us soon! I tried to create a new account and that one went down as well. So over FB....they owe it to their users who keep them a float to stop hiding and man up about what is really going on.

Day 9 as well here in Dallas....made a new account, but don't have the desire to redo.

Regarding the games, and I don't play that many but here is something odd I noticed about YoVille and Farmtown.

I'm logging in with my son's account and when I visit myself (no, I don't sound shcizophrenic at all!?!?) with his character, he gets no points or coins for interacting and my avatar tells him to "take things slow and come back tomorrow" as if he'd already visited today. In Farmtown, my carrots haven't gone to rot either. It's now been 10 days, they should have been toast at day 6.

I only noticed this a few days ago, but it appears as if my avatars are suspended in time. Not sure if that helps anyone put anymore pieces together. I am also starting to see references about accounts being hacked, both PC and Mobile phone users. Though the phone users are calling it a virus and there are some forums out there just like this one with mobile users still talking about this like we are to this date.

I have also contacted Fox. I wrote to Oreilly@foxnews.com with pihty comments about what is going on with all our accounts. Wouldn't it be something to see Bill call these bums out in his fashion. Lets keep up the pressure on Facebook. Ther are acting like children who have done something wrong. You can run, but you can't hide forever. Solidarity with all my locked out brothers, and sisters. Day 9 for me too. How many people are affected by this? FB has NO customer service- frustrating!! I seem to be the only one of my friends or my husband's friends affected. grumble... Hope it comes back soon!

well after much disappointment...I created a new account to keep in touch with family b/c they're worried about me...I'm pregnant and went into early labor a few weeks ago so when my account went MIA they all freaked...once I get my account back I don't think I will use it as much. Day 9 and looking grim!

Guys I just wanted to stop by to say I just got my account back. I have not really reviewed it yet to see if it's all in one piece. I will update you guys further. When I logged on I was prompted with a 3 paragraph explanation as to what happened, and apologies. I wish I could upload a picture of it. I will write it out what was written.

Guys keep hope, I think the accounts will come back sporadically. I will still be coming here to see you guys, and commenting. If there is anything I can do for you let me know. I like how they say we are working to ensure that these sorts of problems never happen again. What they should work on is their customer service skills.

Hi, im from Brazil.There are 13 days can not access my account through the browser showing the following message: "site maintenance".

Just curious, for those that have your account back....did you lose your "city/region network"?

I did and it will not let me add city/region, just school or work.

My account's been inaccessible since 3am on Sunday morning October 4th. That makes it almost 9 days now. Frusturated doesn't even begin to describe my situation. I'm about 1,000 miles away from home (don't know anyone here), unemployed (yes, VERY actively searching), and Facebook was the only way to keep my sanity in touch. Oh, and the best way to stay in contact with everyone. It's a lot easier than emails.

I've sent them numerous emails and left a phone message with no reply yet. I've given up hope for any response or explanation ever. I do know that IF my account ever comes back up, not to expect any kind of customer service from them whatsoever if a problem arises in the future.

Hey Im FINALLY back on. I was locked out since saturday October 3rd, 2009 as were/are many of you. I thank everyone here for posting their updates. It was crazy seeing people getting on while I couldnt. I'm glad Facebook finally got mine resolved. to those of you that havent gotten back in have patience. It may not be too much longer. Finally, my Facebook is back online. Thing is, I actually never bothered to check it all day Monday - just plain forgot. I realised this evening that I'd passed the threshold of not really caring any more.

I get the feeling now it is back, I'm going to be using it rather less. As I've predicted for days, the earlier claims that no data was lost are false, and the lengthy groveling message once the service was back up in no way makes up for the complete lack of updates during the week-plus that it was down.

My Facebook status is going to reflect how disappointed with them for a while... ;-)

mine went out last night about 10 and i was on for about an hour before i logged off and i haven't been able to get on at all. the maintenance screen is back on. while i was on yesterday it was limited. i was not able to access my friends or respond to newsfeeds. hope i can get back on today

Hey guys, so I'm kinda getting worried now. My facebook account started having these issues yesterday and hasn't let me on since. I know it's only been a day for me so far but facebook is the primary means of communication for my classes and now I'm screwed if facebook doesn't fix this issue. How long did it take before all your guys' facebooks started working again? I don't know what to do :( All my friends and family can get on but I'm the only one that can't. Any help?

Had the site maintenance problem yesterday but got in last night, log in today and site maintenance again, wonder why my status update from 2 days ago is the last status feed then look at my friends list. All gone. 3 1/2 years of finding and adding friends who I have met during my life gone in an instant. NOT HAPPY FACEBOOK

Ok happy again now, clicked refresh on the browser and after a very slow reload, 4 minutes, all my friends are back. Very weird

You have 400 friends, you have 0 friends you have 400 friends you have 0 friends. Been on like this all day. Chatting to a friend on the buggy annoying Facebook chat it came up she was now offline. I noticed the 37 friends online had gone to 0 instantly. Clicked on friends and I was back to 0 friends.

Jess, it was like 8-9 days or so before my facebook came back. I had given up after after about a week and started a new account then like 2 days later it was working again. I didn't know people were having this problem again. Sorry you're going through this it was very very frustrating. I live half away across the country from my family and fb is the main way I stay in touch so trust me, I know how you feel.

Well their apology is very unsatisfying... i have no idea how soon my account is going to be made available. This is the third day my account has been unavailable. They issued what the site maintenance explanation the day before mine started to freak out. when reading this news i had assumed that the problem wouldn't reach anymore users. but on Oct.13,2009 my account started acting strange and then became unavailable. i had thought they had the problem controlled and were working on it but they don't if new people keep being affected by whatever it is that's going on. I think i want a more clear explanation of what is going on and how its getting fixed. how long must i wait? This is very upsetting.

Mine went down on Tuesday and no fix yet :( The bizarre thing is that my account is "available" usually until noon, and then I get frozen out for the rest of the day/night. I'm losing my mind with this, especially since they have a notification up that this has been "fixed". I'm unable to access on both my PC & Blackberry application.

Has anyone heard anything about them rectifying this problem for people who are either still having the problem or started having after they supposedely resolved it. I have not been able to get in for 3 days now. On the rare event I do get in I have no friends, I cant see my inbox, it is just a mess! There seems to be no reasonable way to report trouble and believe that they are actually paying attention.

Sorry to hear you are still having problems Firechick747. I don't know if it hurried the process, but it sure made me feel better to fax and harass. If they won't respond then they can hear my message over and over again. I emailed tech support with a screen shot everyday, and I also faxed them repeatedly. I'm told the phone is no end of frustration, so I'd avoid that.

Hey, I missed everyone over here--my account came back a couple of days ago--so I signed on again. Funny how that happened, huh? Hope everyone's back on!

Im becoming desperate... its like an evil trick,,, now i can occasionally access my account BUT i dont have any friends, i dont have any albums, and i cant respond to anyone on my inbox... when i try to search for my old friends i cant find any of them. what is this supposed to mean? is that supposed to be my "FIXED" profile page? i need some sort of explination... i have invested 2 years of my life and memories upoading things on facebook and maintaining long distance friendships using facebook. i want to be notified of the things i should expect... should i keep a hope that all the video and fotos will be recovered?... right now im on ZERO, i have nothing except applications. My husband's account was one of the 150,000 affected in the last outage. Once his account became available, it was hijacked, and his friends were contacted with the bogus "I'm in London I need money scam". He contacted fb and now his account has been suspended until fb can sort it out. Now, yesterday, my account started getting the site maintenance message and I still can't get on this morning. HELP! I just got the site maintenance error thing tonight. When I signed on, all of my friends were gone and my wall posts/status updates from friends were wiped out. What should I do? I reported it.

They said the users should have full access again by October 14th, but I am still only able to login about once every fifteen times I keyed in my password. Even then I have no access to my friends list, access to chat since it said I have 0 friends and could not confirm any requests. Funnily, I could get on the chat if I used one of the Zynga games. Someone should get the Facebook team to buck up.

Hi everybody,. I had read all of this threads a few minute after I got the problem of "account unavailable" I got that too,.
thanks scott for creating this thread,. it give me hope when I know many people had this too and some can fixed from that problem,. according to all I had read in this threads and many more,. its about 3-7 hours they get stuck from this trouble, even some there reach 3 weeks get frustrated. but it's true I got just ''2 HOURS FIXED'',. thanks god I was scare back then,. in that time, I really do nothing just wait and not open my fb while read this thread. i don't know why it can happen but I felt that God blessed me. very lucky.
I just have 207 friends and about 600 photos and just play happy aquarium,. I think it's a bit activities,. I start thinking is that how much the file that you have influential to the speed of fixing progress?? I just guess
But to the others I hope you wait patiently dan hope that God bless you all,.
hopefully I'm not face this problem tomorrow and forward,. if it happen again I hope we lucky again,.
