CTA rider: Lower fares to entice riders

user-pic

"Going Public" has been getting more and more feedback about the proposed CTA fare increases. Two letter writers offer their suggestions on how to help the transit agency without raising fares. The second letter is after the jump.

Robert May of East Lakeview writes: "I'm shocked that CTA has the nerve to raise fares at this time. People of Chicago just can't afford it. This is a common sense issue here.

My grandmother use to say, 'You can catch more flies with honey than you can catch with vinegar. Meaning if CTA cuts administrative staff, and LOWERED the fares, MORE PEOPLE WOULD RIDE CTA.

OK! The problem won't go away all together, but I'm sure CTA would make out better in the end. Raising fares, both CTA and riders lose. It will be cheaper to car pool."

Joseph Tatro writes: "Before being allowed an increase, ALL CTA execs should eliminate all their expense accounts and all their other perks. Every CTA employee or officer making more than $100,000 a year should have their total income reduced to $100,000 a year with no bonuses or other hidden income.

I think the same should also apply to City Hall and all the city public agencies, including the mayor himself. I think all payment to the private companies (Daley's friends, kronies, relations) should be imediately frozen as most are more expensive then wages of public employees replaced by them. It is unfair to ask citizens and public employees to give up even one penny without first chopping all the fat from above."

Joseph Tatro, has some good points, and ideas. Robert May, not so much.

Tom Tresser of No Games fame is running for county board president.Perhaps he could be persuaded to offer a county subsidy to the C.T.A. to avert fare increases. If one candidate championed this, then all candidates would have to support this to avoid alienating a huge voting bloc.
Tresser's former organization has a survey for ideas on how improve Chicago and what they should do now,on their website. You might want to post your suggestions there, too.
