Wow.

About 10 minutes ago, I got this tweet from @_ashleyyy:

any news on what's going on near depaul lincoln park campus? there's helicopters and police all over belden/sheffield area.

So I checked the Tribune's Breaking News blog to see if there was anything, but there wasn't. So I retweeted @_ashleyyy to see if anyone else knew.

And just like that - in a matter of a few seconds - we found out it was a chemical spill. And we found out like this:

Amazing.
I've always envisioned a day when @redeyechicago would have social media reporters reporting news for all of Chicagoland to follow. And this unintentional exercise proves that it's not only possible, but it's feasible and works.

Even if the story turns out to be a minor story, it's still a story that gets covered and all of @redeyechicago's twitter followers find out about it fast. At the end of the day, that's what a good news organization does. And having such great followers just adds so much.
