For RedEye

If Button Pushers was a mathematical equation, the band would look something like this: The Beatles + Steely Dan x Pink Floyd  divided by   sci-fi geek = Button Pushers.

"Our songwriting definitely starts with The Beatles, just because we arrange the vocals to harmonize and create the melodic hooks," said keyboardist/vocalist Johnny Bliss.

"We definitely focus on the vocal melody as the most important thing."

Bliss recently chatted with RedEye about the band.

What's the craziest thing that's happened to the band?
We're such a boring band ... all we do is practice. But about a year ago we discovered one of our songs being used on A&E's "The Cleaner." I had a deal with a music publishing company that I thought had been over, but apparently they thought otherwise. It all worked out, though, in the end. [Laughs]

What's most surprising to know about the band?
I think what surprises most of our friends and people that come to see the show is how tight the band is. Usually we play a 3-hour set and we like to focus on the little things like vocal detail and arrangements. We rehearse a lot.

How do you describe your sound?
I have heard us described as "Kool-Aid Rock." We struggle to describe what the exact sound is just because it's very eclectic and can fall into a lot of different genres. We try to keep the music as fun as possible.

What makes your live show great?
We do tend to play long sets, so we really try to make the set list flow nicely. We're not afraid to get analytical and break it down and make sure we don't have a few songs in a row with the same beat or style. We also pride ourselves on vocals and making that the center focus of each song.

Tell us something totally random about the band.
When we first started we went through about 12 different members of the band. We had a bunch of false starts--I guess we were using too many friends and not enough just straight-up musicians.

We're also the most punctual band in Chicago according to the venues we play. ... It's not just a Spinal Tap joke anymore--we actually show up on time ready to play.

RedEye's all about what's hot in Chicago. So we've created Chi-Tunes, your new destination for information on Chicago's home-grown bands and music artists. We're turning the spotlight on emerging Chicago musicians you may not have heard of-until now. Return each week to see who's been added. And do you know about a Chicago musician or band that must be on our list? Tell us at chitunes@tribune.com.
