Operator, please hold

Posted Jan. 28 at 1:15 p.m.

Most "Going Public" questions and comments come via e-mail, so when someone calls me at the RedEye office, I take special notice, especially when it's a CTA employee.  Let's face it...  Due to their fear of retribution from the higher-ups, they don't exactly feel as free as we riders are to speak their public transit peace.

That's why I'm looking forward to talking to a female operator who left me a message, saying she will call me back to give me the operator perspective on some comments she has seen in the RedEye.

Operators are often criticized, but their situation might have been worsened by the recent Tribune report about them running stop lights, essentially leaving tax-payers with the tab.  I'll let you know what happens once I find out what her bus beef is.  Stay tuned...

The City - Love/Hate (episode 5)

user-pic

Posted 10:04 p.m., Jan. 19

I love Whitney but I hate that the show's first two episodes have been the best so far. That's not all I love and hate about the show. Here are the top five reasons I loved and hated this episode:

1. Love that Whitney and Jay go on a double date and are so cute sitting on a park bench together.

2. Love that Whit hasn't forgotten LA and admits to being homesick.

3. Love how beautiful NYC looks in the fall with the changing color of leaves in Central Park.

4. Love that Whitney is still the logical one, wondering what is wrong with people who cheat on their boyfriends or girlfriends.

5. Love that Whitney looks out for other girls and talks to Allie about Adam.

-

1. Hate that Allie is insecure about Adam, telling Whitney to keep an eye on him when she's out of town.

2. Hate that Olivia complains about not having time to go to the Christie's auction to buy art and gives her cousin a hard time about him staying on her couch.

3. Hate how a boys night can lead to trouble - girl trouble.

4. Hate that the first thing Allie hears upon returning from her trip is a rumor that a girl kissed Adam.

5. Hate the suspicion that Adam made out with some girl and he's not telling Allie.

Check out more scenes from this season: Jay and Whit go to Miami and spend New Year's together but it seems there may be some bumps in their relationship along the way.

Whitney's wardrobe malfunction

Posted 5:07 p.m., Jan. 13

Whitney had a wardrobe malfunction and of course it was caught by a photographer.

People.com said she was adjusting her bikini top.

"Okay so a couple photos were captured while I was in Miami that weren't the most discreet and I'm sorry if they offended anyone but I got too caught up in the sunshine and the weather that I guess I wasn't as cautious as I should have been," Whit wrote on her blog.

"Everyone knows the rough and tumble of the ocean mixed with a bathing suit -- not the most attractive thing ever! So sorry for the view...very embarrassing to say the least!"

"I guess all I can do now is laugh about it and move on!"

That's the right attitude. And she's got nothing to worry about. After all, Andre from Vogue told her she should be a model anyways. She's got the perfect body.

The City - Love/Hate (episode 4)

Love to see Jay's come around and wants to be exclusive with Whitney. Aww. Here's what else we loved and hated.

1. Love that we get to see Whit's boss, Diane Von Furstenberg, and that she likes the job Whitney is doing.

2. Love that Olivia is told to assist Whitney for the Wonder Woman event at DVF.

3. Love that Olivia doesn't tell Jay Whitney went out to lunch with Chris from DVF.

4. Love that Whit tells Jay about her lunch date. See she's not being sneaky.

5. Love that Whit smiles when she tells Jay she's not trying to make him jealous with her lunch date. Hey, she's playing the game.

6. Love that Jay recognizes Whit is a "keeper" after dating for 3 months and then sweetly tells her he wants her to be his girlfriend - his third one ever.

Now the bad news:

1. Hate that Whit tries to kiss up to DVF by telling her she's so pretty - not part of the job Whit.

2. Hate that Olivia awkwardly does the double cheek kiss on those who show up at DVF event and says "toodles."

3. Hate that Whitney tries to convince herself she might want to date other people by going out to lunch with Chris.

4. Hate that Erin tells Duncan she loves him and yet gets uneasy when he talks about moving to NYC. Huh?

5. Hate that Jay can't admit over dinner he doesn't want Whit to date other guys.

6. Hate that "boys are so confusing" as Whit says.

Third-hand smoking

user-pic

Posted - Jan. 7, 2009 - 3:20 p.m.

CiggyThe New York Times recently wrote about the phenomenon of "third hand smoking," which describes the residue -- including heavy metals, carcinogens and even radioactive materials -- that smoking leaves behind and children can ingest.

Doctors from MassGeneral Hospital for Children in Boston coined the term, the Times reports.

Illinois recently celebrated the one-year banniversary of smoking. Smoking isn't allowed in most places including bars, restaurants and workplaces.

No longer after leaving a bar would people be able to smell ya later. Still, the smoke masked some of the other unpleasant odors that have now become more pronounced in Chicago bars.

Check out the recent RedEye story about the smoking banniversary. Smoking ban: yay or nay?

Brain sex

Brain_sex Posted - Jan. 6, 2008 - 6:26 p.m.

"Brain sex" was the best part of this week's blah episode of the typically stellar "Brothers & Sisters."

"Brain sex" is the term that Kitty Walker used to describe the heated intellectual back-and-forth she had with her husband and former boss Robert McCallister. "Brain sex" then morphed from an exchange of ideas to an exchange of … well, you know.

From "brain vacation" to "brain sex." Welcome back to the grind.

The City - Love/Hate (episode 3)

Posted 9:46 p.m., Jan. 5

Well, I must admit I had higher expectations for the third episode. But surprisingly it was quite a bore. Sorry, Whit.

Here's what I did and didn't like:

1. Love that we see another guy - Duncan from Toronto, Erin's boyfriend.

2. Love that Jay found Whitney her apartment.

3. Love that for a moment Olivia offered her help in finding Whitney a place to live.

4. Love that Erin had enough guts to use the L-word.

5. Love that Jay is cautious about throwing around the L-word and distinguishing between love and lust.

6. Love that Olivia's cousin got ticketed for spitting on a subway platform. That's gross.

And now for the bad news:

1. Hate that Erin and Duncan seem so boring planning a movie night and talking about whether to watch Titanic.

2. Hate that I'm so jealous Whitney can afford a high-rise apartment with floor to ceiling windows, hardwood floors and a balcony in Gramercy.

3. Hate that Olivia doesn't mind her own business and tries to tell Whitney how to live her life and not rely on a guy cause it'll backfire. Sounds like she's talking from personal experience.

4. Hate that the other girl in the DVF office looked like she was giving the stink eye cause they were talking about guys instead of fashion at work.

5. Hate how Olivia is twists the truth and says Whitney asked her for advice, complaining about how Whitney left work early and is bitchy that Whitney didn't follow her advice in looking at other neighborhoods and getting the first apartment she saw.

6. Hate that Jay doesn't tell Whitney he wants her to be his girlfriend but just wants to get to know her better - even if he doesn't want to see other people.

Whitney's City recap

user-pic

Posted 4:42 p.m., Jan. 2

Whit answers two questions I had been thinking about since "The City" premiered - how does she know Erin? And is she still with Jay?

Whit blogs that she met Erin through their ex-boyfriends at Coachella (music fest in Southern California). "We had all stayed in an RV together there and instantly hit it off! I loved her free spirit and outgoing personality and I knew our friendship would last."

Whitney also blogged about how she felt about having the cameras follow her and Jay.

"It was so crazy/surreal for me to have one of my first dates with Jay filmed! First dates are awkward enough, let alone having four cameras in your face, but our connection was so real that it didn't even phase us! I love the part where Jay does his American accent lol. I force him to do it ALL the time. It's one of my favorite things he does! My attempt at an Australian accent is something he could do without, i'm sure."

"After the date, I didn't think the cameras had caught us kissing down the street, but sure enough they did!!!"

Speidi party in Vegas on NYE

user-pic

Posted 4:20 p.m., Jan. 2

Speidi hosted the Christian Audigier New Year's Eve soiree at Treasure Island in Las Vegas. Sure they got paid a pretty penny for that one.

Anywho, Heidi screamed, "2009 is going to be the best year ever!" according to Usmagazine.com.

And as usual Spencer had to get in some words: "Who's drunk? C'mon, this is Vegas! I can't hear you! Who is ready for 2009? We got 60 seconds to the best year of our lives. 2008 wasn't it...it's 2009!"

Usmagazine.com says they only stayed for 20 minutes after midnight because they had to catch a flight to NYC. But of course, the duo toasted glasses of Dom Perignon before leaving. What? No tequila Heidi?

New Year's Resolutions

She pratt vma

Wanna know what the Pratts' promise to do in 2009? Here's what they told Usmagazine.com:

"To stop eating pizza every day. I think my wife's resolution will make that happen. She says she's going to cook." - Spencer

Maybe Spencer's should have been to be nicer to people - like Heidi's family.

"I'm making my boyfriend quit smoking. I'm lazy -- that's all I'm doing!" - She-Pratt

She-Pratt's should be standing up for herself to her brother.

Audrina listed hers on her blog: "Usually I am not very good at keeping my resolutions, but this year I am going to try my hardest to stick to them."

Audrina-hills finale

Here they are:

1. Be more punctual.

2. Make more time for myself.

3. Read at least one new book a month.

4. Learn a foreign language (I hear the best way to do so is by submerging yourself entirely and definitely getting Rosetta Stone! haha).

"Last but certainly not least, my fifth and most important resolution is to visit three of the seven continents and contribute in a charitable way. I've been doing a lot of charity this holiday season and seeing children smile is addictive. : )"

Maybe it should be to finally make a decision about Justin Bobby. I can't take it if she says again she's done with him and then goes back. But I have hopes she'll stick with him this time. We'll see.
