A food desert is a large area that has limited grocery store options and a heavy concentration of fast food restaurants or convenience stores, according to Mari Gallagher, whose North Side research firm has been studying Chicago's food conditions since 2006.
RedEye's map series this week explores Chicago's food deserts. We plotted seven major grocery chains and showed where the main food deserts are located (Roseland, West Englewood, Grand Boulevard and Washington Park).
Gallagher's research in 2006 found that a half-million Chicagoans live in a food desert. Gallagher plans to release updated food desert numbers next month.
Do you live in a food desert? What are your grocery store options?

I am luck enough to live 3 blocks from a gigantic grocery store. This is a really cool website for figuring out how "walkable" your neighborhood is: http://walkscore.com/
