Green products worth picking up
Things that caught my eye recently:

What makes it special is the fact that it's small and mounts on walls,
as well as porches, balconies and gates. I personally think it'd make
the perfect recycling bin for outdoor parties.
The Glam Can retails for $29.99.
>> Flat Top Grill's Green Consumer Week is Sept. 21-25, complete with organic wine tastings, ticket giveaways to the Museum of Science and Industry's Smart Home, among other fun things.
The idea is to "engage consumers in all things green," according to the press release. The wine tastings will take place Tuesday, Sept. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the locations in Oak Park, Evanston, Lombard and North Avenue in Chicago. Wednesday, Sept. 23 tastings take place in Naperville, as well as Chicago's Washington Ave. and Southport Ave. locations. They'll also be giving away 5 $100 gift cards to Home Depot.
And, even better, you'll get to save some green. Prices are down to $6.99 for one stir-fry and $7.99 for the unlimited during lunch hours.
>> "This Green House: Home Improvements for the Eco-Smart, the Thrifty, and the Do-It-Yourselfer," by Joshua Piven, is a hilarious do-it-yourself book on eco improvements for your home. There are serious and not so serious suggestions and step-by-step instructions for raising trout in your swimming pool, as well as making coffee-ground charcoal. I particularly like the section on how to build an eco-fort.
This book would make a good coffee-table book or the perfect gift for someone who has just bought a home. Not all the tips are practical for apartment dwellers. The book costs $15.95.
>> Ever tried Carol's Cookies? They are the most amazing cookies I've ever tried. I'm not really a cookie kind of gal, usually. But these guys are different. I'm writing about them here because they're local--Carol is based out of Highland Park.
To reward myself on the first day of the Locavore Challenge, I stopped by Whole Foods to grab one of the toffee chocolate chip cookies. These things are massive--usually it takes me about 4 days to eat on. I ate most of this one just today ...
