Eastland disaster - July 24, 1915
Nearly 850 people died after the S. S. Eastland rolled over in the Chicago River. Many of the passengers on board, employees of Hawthorne Works, were headed to Indiana for a company event. The ship was later salvaged, refurbished and named the USS Wilmette. (Chicago Tribune Photo)
