Two people protesting the installation of new parking pay boxes by LAZ Parking, were arrested this morning at around 9:30 AM in the 8900 block of south Commercial Ave.

Protesters based out of the Centro Communitario Juan Diego (CCJD) opposed to the installation of new parking meters along two blocks of S. Commercial Ave. in the South Chicago neighborhood, have staged a sit in in an attempt to keep new pay boxes from being installed for the past two months.

But this morning, according to CCJD staff, LAZ crews came to install the first of several pay boxes on the street, with police in tow. When they saw the crews attempting to install the first machine, the protesters walked to the installation site, congregating on top of where the new pay box would be installed.

Two women, staff members of CCJD, who refused to move from the installation site, were arrested.

"They were prepared," said CCJD staffer Robert Garcia. "It wasn't an accident that the police came along. They knew there was opposition and they brought the police with them. They were expecting it."

Spokespeople for Chicago Parking Meters, LLC/LAZ Parking had no comment on the incident.
