Good morning, Chicago! Here's the latest in housing news from around the city and the nation:
Old Phase, New Phase - Micah Maidenberg details the new phase of Rockwell promised by developer East Lake Management that I wrote about last week. The journal also has an interesting summary of how the housing market is affecting the city's best-laid plans.
CHA approves $1.4 million for counseling, employment services - Adrian Uribarri summarizes last week's board meeting.
Lincoln Park neighbors hope to guide redevelopment of Children's Memorial site - interesting Trib article about what might move into Lincoln Park as the hospital plans to move out.
CHA program helps families save money and rebuild their lives - I missed this Family Self-Sufficiency graduation because I was sick, but luckily someone was there. FSS is a really innovative program that helps publichousing residents get on a 5-year plan to improve their economic stability where CHA helps them save and then matches the money they would spend on rent increases as their income goes up.
Public housing residents blast new community rules - a fascinating article from Baltimore's mixed-income communities, where residents feel like prisoners in their own homes because of the crazy rules. At one point, a market rate tenant photographs children playing on their street to have evidence of her neighbors breaking the rules. Also, an interesting anecdote towards the end about unpaid water bills. (if the website flashes at you, keep scrolling down...)
Atlanta makes way for new public housing - NYT talks about Atlanta's public housing demo and rebuild, which has been very similar to Chicago's. The city is preparing to demolish the last of it's old public housing this month.
Like Sotamayor, KC-area families work to get out of the projects - How do families move up and out of public housing? Is it possible? Great narrative piece about Kansas City families living in public housing.
Did I miss anything? Let me know!
