- It's a weekend (well, weekend and early next week) of film, comics and screenprinting, and it kicks off Friday night with the Chicago Art Department's Video Art 101, which explores the medium of video through an art exhibition.
- Saturday, the historic Portage Theater hosts Holiday of Horrors Film Festival. Nothing says "holiday spirit" like gore, terror, and suspense on a big screen. Films include Christmas Evil, Silent Night, Deadly Night, New Years Evil, and Black Santa's Revenge. Lewis Jackson, the director of Christmas Evil, will be there in person. If that's not enough, there will also be vendors, free stuff, and booze.

- Non-profit Open Books fights illiteracy with their community programs and volunteers, and this weekend they take it a step further with the grand opening of their used bookstore and literacy center. The Fourth Annual Chicago Calling Arts Festival (CCAF4) features Chicago-based artists collaborating with artists living in other locations. The following events are part of this festival.
- Friday, Brown Rice (4432 N. Kedzie.) features two sets of sound, music, and film. A performance by Chicago Phonography is followed by more performances by Chicago-based musicians and films by non-local filmmakers.$5 suggested donation.

Chicago is hosting an all-ages show and BBQ today at The Hideout featuring local favorites 8 Inch Betsy, Lemmy Caution, Glass Bricks, Youth Dekay and the Degenerettes from Baltimore. It's an all-ages show, so bring the kids!
Ukulele Cabaret, an evening of uke-centric performances, happens tonight at Silvie's Lounge (1902 W. Irving Park Road) at 9pm. Tonight's theme is "The Ukers Wild", which means that interested parties are invited to bring three songs on any theme of their choosing. Should be interesting.

- The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) hosts a series of free public workshops this summer called GO TO 2040 "Invent the Future", where the feedback you contribute will help them create a scenario that will best reflect the region's desired future.
