I am a graduate student at DePaul University focusing on broadcast journalism. Originally I am from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

After deciding it was more important to focus on the topic of Education in Old Town, I had the opportunity to speak with Kathleen Valchuk.

Kathleen Valchuk is no stranger to the community of Old Town.

Valchuk created the Sandburg Village, a local newspaper that covers news on the community. She was drawn to the area as it is a "very active community." She notes that people are there to help one another out which she attributes to the fact that "we really have a tight nit community, especially with our church and school relationships."

Valchuk, who now works for the archdiocese is actively working to redevelop the Immaculate Conception School. Valchuk is working to raise money for the school so that it can add additional grades on and go up to 8th grade.

She comments that "while I haven't always been a part of Old Town, it really feels like home."

Valchuk use to live farther away, and then decided to move in to the Old Town area. Valchuk said "what's so nice about this area is it is made up of every different kind of color and ethnicity."

Valchuk said there are a lot of ways the community does together. For instance "there are even tea parties"  she said.

Her job now though is to "help advocate learning" in the Old Town are and specifically to help expand the Immaculate Conception School. Valchuk said "this community is so great because the parents are very actively involved with the school, church, and outside of these as well."

Kathleen Valchuk also said that "the parents have meetings continually to improve the area."

Valchuk believes there is a lot of interaction between all the people in the community. For instance Valchuk said "we have kids monthly family masses, and it just tickles me these little children. They really treat everyone the same here."

Ms. Valchuk was very helpful in providing me with some other contacts. She suggested that I contact Katie Sullivan who Valchuk said is a "true advocate for childhood education in the Old Town area." She also suggested I try to contact the one of the priests at the Immaculate Conception Church, Old Town Triangle Association and the Merchants Association.

Valchuk was a very informed citizen and an advocate herself.
