Hurricane Katrina Still a Mighty Force Five Years Later as Lives Remain Upended
Today is Sunday, August 29th, the fifth-year anniversary of the devastating and historical natural disaster hurricane Katrina. It's an emotional day for a lot of people with ties to the city. So many never returned home to live again, like my Dad. So many likely never will, like me.

Don't Trample the Flowers, But You Can Yell at Them If You're Angry
Remember in "Forrest Gump" when Jenny as a little girl angrily threw a bunch of rocks at her childhood home? Forrest quipped: "Sometimes there just aren't enough rocks". Well, I liked that Jenny homed those dang-on rocks. It was much healthier than what she did later to deal with her anger issues. Here are just a few tips for safely managing anger in society. :)

Roger Ebert Faces Cancer, Disfigurement with Dignity We Should All Hope We'd Have
Seeing someone like film critic Roger Ebert, who was once so passionately connected to his voice--he now speaks via a machine--and to media in service to his craft, essentially silenced and physically broken is just too graphic a reminder for some that life just ain't fair. Well, it ain't. And we might as well rid ourselves of such romantic notions and enjoy life when it is generous.

The Earthquake in Haiti Underscores Mama's Example to Give to Those in Real Need
My last blog feels a bit prescient in light of the earthquake in Haiti. I had just written on Thursday about how my mother in New Orleans surprised me with news that she sends monthly donations toward helping poor children in Haiti and that she always wanted to do more. I knew the country was desperately poor, but it wasn't exactly on my radar screen on a monthly basis; yet it was on my mama's. Now the world has an eye on a place that has long needed our attention.

Charity Truly Begins at Home When You Set the Example on Giving for Your Little Ones
My mother didn't sit us on her lap as kids and say, "Here are my thoughts on helping others." But she always had a spirit of charity about her. Kids pick up so much through what's implied, so I knew my mother had charity in her heart.
