Great post. Here's a fun video about healthy eating made by Chicago youth working with Community TV Network:

This was awesome

The Nutritionist was right because obesity has become the number one health risk among African American adults and teens.

I am so proud of the creative teens that put this together. They did a great job of introducing health in an entertaining, but yet educational format. Hopefully, more schools will follow their example.

By the way, my next big focus is tackling the youth obesity epedemic. I will introduce them to proper nutrition and fitness.

Thanks for sharing.

Well the good thing is that none of those places are in my community either. But I am willing to bet that the places that are may well be as bad. But we could never know, they do not have nutritional charts in the eateries in the hood.

Hey Wiz-

Well said. I can't dispute the truth.

I checked out your website. As Borat would say, niiiccceee! Thanks for sharing and I will definitely check out some of your featured blogs.

Those are pretty bad. I'll bet if you listed the sodium in those dishes, they would be "off the chart".

I've taken pictures of many of the TV commercials that demonstrate how Americans eat. It ain't a pretty picture. Check it out at: http://bit.ly/bdP1qa

Thanks for the information.

Chef Paul,

It would be my pleasure to collaborate on a blog topic with you. I'm always reading, willing, and able to (try) to assist when it comes to diet, health, and lifestyle issues.

Chef Paul,

BTW, if you haven't seen these spoof videos about the Western diet (fast food), you'll probably get a kick out of them - http://bit.ly/1F6z48

This is a bit misleading, don't you think Chef Eric? For example, you claim that PF Chang's Pork Lo Mein has 1,820 calories - 127 g fat - 95 g carbs. Is that per serving, total for the entire order, what is the comparison? I also believe that someone's numbers are off, as PF Chang's is reporting the per serving caloric intake for their Lo Mein with Pork as 320 cal (for 4 servings, that's 1280 NOT 1820 calories). Please check your facts PRIOR to filing your articles.

FRP

You are right. I used the total dish size versus the number of servings per dish. Since many people eat what is on the plate, I did not make the distinction. Also, for PF Chang's dish it is 1280 and not 1820 calories. I obviously switched the number 2 and 8 (my bad). Thanks again for keeping me honest and I welcome your continued feedback on my post. I will also make the correction to my post.

Thanks frp. As I was going throught this list, I kept wondering what these calorie counts were based on. This is what I find infuriating about nutritional information. You want us to make better choices, but don't give us enough information to make an informed decision.

If the calories are for the entire dish, then clearly say so. These kinds of dishes can be split, so why not make that suggestion?

Chef Eric Paul said:

user-pic

Hey Annoir-

Hopefully my response to FRP cleared up any confusion. Since most restaurants list the calories for the entire dish, I used a similar method. I totally agree that people should split dishes or put some in a to go container before they start their meal, but I have to question how often that happens.

In my previous post http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/ndigo-alter-eatgos-healthy-kitchen/2009/12/portion-control-just-say-no-to-supersize.html, I mention tips to help people not overeat.

Are you sure these are the worst? Because they actually look like the best to me. My mouth is watering after looking at those pictures. Think I'll stop at Bob Evans on the way home from work.

120+ grams carbs for an Uno's? Is that for a pizza (what size?) or for one slice? The photo shows one slice.

Chef Eric Paul said:

user-pic

Hey ChipSet-

On Uno's website, they list a classic slice at 770 calories. The normal serving for an individual is three slices, which is based on their info.

Chef Paul,

It seems like you are taking a lot of flack for not mentioning serving size. Here's the scoop: Study after study has shown that no matter the size of the portion, we will eat it. All restaurants serve portions that are much more than one serving.

So, it's naturally assumed that your figures are based on the item being served.

Even our plates at home are much larger than the portions from just 20 years-ago. If you would like to see a visual of this, I recommend checking this out: http://bit.ly/aPnhEz.

Chef Paul,

Glad to assist. The American food system can get complex quickly. So, I like to keep it simple because that's how it should be.

All of these things are bad, but let's keep things in perspective. I eat stuff like this in moderation, and I am a guy who is 5'7" and 145. Of course you're going to pack on pounds if you're careless enough to eat these fat and calorie bombs on a regular basis.

Chef Eric Paul said:

Jackie-

I am gald that you brought up the point about moderation and making sure you burn those unwanted calories.

When I was 21, my metabolism allowed me to eat anything because I was constantly working out and burning calories. As I have gotten older, I find it harder to burn those calories.

I have to admit that my sweet tooth gets the best of me sometimes so I love to give into it every now and then. If you are working out, you should treat yourself once in a while.

Chef Eric Paul said:

T-Funk-

Yes, yes and yes. I totally believe in moderation, which is why I called my company Alter EatGo. I know there is always a struggle between making good choices and bad ones. I founded my company not from a health nut's perspective, but from a realistic point of view that I had to meet people where they are in life.

I am 40 years old, 6' 2" and 225, but I only treat myself to decadent delights once a week. I don't believe in totally denial because you only live once and not many people are going to have the discipline to stay away from bad foods 100% of the time. Nor would I ask them to do so.

Great points!
