The Bald Truth
Illini Land is cranky after Ron Zook's first low-rated recruiting class, but I don't know why. Logic suggests that if he loses big with great recruits, he almost surely will win big with less-than-great recruits.
Damn. I knew I should have paid more attention during my freshman Logic class at Marquette.
Zook is a bad game-planner and a worse game-day coach who has done one thing well over the years: recruit. This time, he says, he was undermined by negative recruiting - and, of course, by the evil media.
Zook's lament: Stoopid media!
"(Opposing coaches) don't have to say anything. They can just take the articles and put them in front of (recruits)."
Stoopid sportswriters! Always making crap up. Why were we writing that the Illini went 3-9 last season when everyone knows they actually won the Rose Bowl?
And why do we have to even mention Zook's four losing seasons (with a combined 12-35 record) instead of constantly waxing poetic about the 9-4 Smoke & Mirrors Campaign of '07?
How is a coach supposed to win faced with such a daunting obstacle?
The Quote
"Obviously, you're defending your manhood. You're defending everything about you every time you go out there." - Ron Zook
Yes, and there's nothing more manly than blaming the media and opposing coaches and pretty much everybody but yourself for your team being a Big Ten laughingstock.
The Balder Truth
With MLS collective-bargain talks stagnating, there's a strong possibility that a work stoppage is on the horizon.
This would be a terrible thing for MLS fans.
Both of them.
THE BALDEST TRUTH
With his team's victory over the Bobcats, Phil Jackson became the Lakers' winningest coach ever.
In related news, Vinny Del Negro is making a strong run at not becoming the Bulls' winningest coach ever.

Okay, time for the Zooker to go. He's had five years and has given us the same rollercoaster we got under Turner. A setback now and then is expected in college football. Good players graduate or leave for the NFL. But you develop their replacements. This team isn’t developing. It’s stagnating.
I don't disagree with Zook’s hiring. He was worth a shot. But he didn't pan out, so we move on. We’re probably due for an up and coming coach who will get us back to the BCS and then bolt for a traditional football powerhouse.

This Illinois fan doesn't ask for too much more then being competitive. I don't 11-1 od 10-2 every year with a BCS bowl win. 8-4 with a bowl victory looks like roses after what our fans have been through year after year, coach after coach and AD after AD.
