The Bald Truth

Notre Dame fans have such unrealistically high expectations.

I mean, Charlie Weis has beaten Navy one of the last three years!

What more do those overly demanding Golden Domers want from their football coach?

The Balder Truth

As much as I enjoyed watching the Iowa-Northwestern game on ESPN, I have to say I was personally insulted when Bob Griese joked that Sandy Koufax was "out having bagels and lox."

       THE BALDEST TRUTH

Saturday's college football countdown:

5. Syracuse isn't so swell these days, but just wait 'til next year ... when Elton Brand is quarterbacking the Orangeman.

4. Dopey Hawkeye rooters who thought Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz should have benched Ricky Stanzi
when the QB struggled in last week's win over Indiana now know one of
the two reasons Ferentz didn't even consider making the move.

James Vandenberg might be good someday but, as he demonstrated in Saturday's streak-busting loss to Northwestern, he's the opposite of good now.

The other reason? Uh ... hello!
Iowa hadn't lost a game since midway through last season with Stanzi at
QB. The Hawkeyes are Big Ten contenders this year largely because of
Stanzi's clutch play. You don't pull a successful quarterback for
having a couple of bad quarters. You trust him to come through in the
end, as Stanzi did against the Hoosiers.

Right about now, the second-guessing
dopes no doubt wish Stanzi had stayed healthy so he could have gotten a
chance to come through against Northwestern.

3. Had Penn State played any varsity opponents before the
start of the conference season, maybe JoePa's lads would be a little
more prepared for Big Ten competition.

2. This quote, from Navy linebacker Ram Vela (a totally cool name, by the way) sums up how Notre Dame has become so totally unspecial:

"We'd done
it before and we went into this game not really placing as much emphasis or too
much importance on it. We just treated it like another game."

1. There's no way to say this without sounding cold, so I'm just gonna say it: Rough break for Juice Williams but fortunate break for the Illinois program.

Even
if Juice is healthy enough to play again this season after spraining is
ankle early in Saturday's victory at Minnesota, it would accomplish
little to keep throwing the senior out there.

The experience and confidence that QB of the future Jacob Charest can gain these final few weeks of the season might help the Fighting Illini actually win more games than they lose in 2010.

Which is all that should matter to Ron Zook ... because without a winning 2010, Illinois probably will move on to 2011 without him.
