Something smells rotten in the bowels of the United Center, and it has nothing to do with Chicago's famously pungent sewer system.
My last couple of freelance writing assignments took me to the U.C. for Bulls and Blackhawks games, and I couldn't help but notice the life-sized photos on the new "walls of fame" outside the team's respective locker rooms.
On the "Blackhawks Legacy" side were Glenn Hall, Pierre Pilote, Tony Esposito, Denis Savard, Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull and Keith Magnuson.
Where are Jeremy Roenick and Chris Chelios?
Bulls honor wrong guys, Blackhawks don't honor enough
Roenick had
two 50-goal and two 40-goal seasons. Chelios probably is the best
U.S.-born player in hockey history. Both were leaders. Both played
major roles in getting the Hawks to the 1992 Stanley Cup finals.
But at least the seven chosen Hawks deserve to be on their wall. I'm not sure the same can be said about the hoopsters across the hall.
The "Bulls Legends" are Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Jerry Sloan, Bob Love, Chet Walker, Norm Van Lier, Artis Gilmore, Toni Kukoc and John Paxson.
Really? Paxson instead of Horace Grant, who along with Jordan and Pippen gave the Bulls the NBA's most formidable trio? One also could make a convincing argument that Grant deserved the honor more than either Rodman or Kukoc.
And Gilmore over Bill Cartwright, the missing piece to the first-threepeat puzzle?
Tune in next season, folks, when Kornel "The Hungarian Jordan" David joins the Bulls Legends.

Mike,
Your piece on the walls of fame in the UC reminded me that sports teams today are possed of short term memory when honoring former stars. These walls go farther back in team history (Gilmore, Makita) than the Cubs have on ther foul poles. A recent naming of the all time Cubs did not go back past the '50s. Same thing on the Cub Nine on their web site. Where are Tinker, Evers, Chance, Hack Wilson, Gabby Hartnett, Phil Caveretta, Stan Hack? (By the way, I would hope the Blackhawks considered Doug and Max Bentley and Bill Mosienko.)
