What did you do New Year's Eve?

Bartender/Singer @Davenports Piano Bar & Cabaret. Marathon runner. Wine drinker.

When anyone found out I was working at a bar on New Year's Eve, the first response was always "Wow! How fun!"

I never knew how to respond. I mean -- yes, it is fun. It is an exciting night and people are more apt to be receptive to what is happening in the bar rather than trying to create their own fun. It is the collective experience of NYE that brings people who normally do not go out to bars to come out on that specific night.

I usually equate NYE to a wedding. It can be good. It can be bad. People tend to be mildly tipsy, having a good time and enjoying all the people they are with.

Then comes the turning point. Everyone has been at weddings when the turning point occurs and everyone seems completely hammered. Things are a little out of control and the few sober ones do not know what to make of it. It is at that point that you just don't know what is going to happen next.

This is what NYE is like. As a bartender, you watch the turning point. You hope that everyone remains in their pleasant, happy drunk place and nobody goes to the point where there is somebody crying, vomiting or fighting.

Fortunately for me, this year (which is my fifth NYE working in a bar) was pleasant and everyone had a good time. Here is a pic of me making two cosmos -- the most popular drink of the night at Davenport's. Cheers and hope to see you NYE 2010!

BONUS: Here is a link to a video from NYE 2008 where a bunch of suburbanites in their 40s and 50s decided to have a dance party in the bar at 1 am. Nice.

Dan, you ALWAYS make it fun and NYE was no exception! Best wishes in 2010!

For those who have never been there, Davenport's is definitely one-of-a-kind; a classic New York-style pianobar with a focus on "The Great American Songbook" (showtunes, jazz, classic pop/rock) and there's not another club like it in Chicago. Dan and the entire singing staff make each night like New Years Eve.
