Box office blog: 'Christmas' wins, sends Zemeckis the wrong message

Dear Robert Zemeckis,
Thank you again for "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?," the "Back to the Future" series and "Forrest Gump."

We do not, however, congratulate you--even though you're a Chicago native--on this weekend's box office win for your junky motion-capture animated "A Christmas Carol," which earned $31.1 million. Sure, audiences frequently embrace holiday stories around the holidays (obviously) but that doesn't mean you should continue to mess up beloved stories with your creepy attempts at using new technology. Stop. Please.

Yes, we know that your movie destroyed the competition, with other new releases placing third (with $13.3 million for "The Men Who Stare At Goats"), fourth ($12.5 million for "The Fourth Kind") and sixth ($7.86 million for "The Box"). But that doesn't seem like such a big deal when compared to the performance of "Precious," which earned $1.8 million in only 18 theaters. Translation: When you actually put out a quality product, people flock to your movie too, and they'll still be talking about it come Oscar season.

Best,
Matt

Actually, can you take Forrest Gump back? It's an enormous piece of indulgent, sappy sh*t. It winning best picture is on scale with Rocky winning best picture (in that it didn't deserve it, in case you couldn't tell). But other than that, yeah, thanks for the Back to the Future franchise. You almost get a pass just because of that.
