This is the glass case by the entrance door of Flirty Girl Fitness.

When I went to Northern Michigan University, I learned that it was also the home to one of two Olympic boxing training camps (the other one was in Denver, I believe). I'd see the boxers sparring outside or running extra early in the morning the one time I had the genius idea to take a class before 10 a.m. (I'd never do that again. Morning person, I am not.) I even went to a match or two to support a couple of the boxers that I'd befriended. And I still didn't really understand the appeal. I didn't understand how someone could enjoy hitting something, especially another person unless being forced to. I'd been told by the couple boxing friends I had that it was more than that--it was a good form of exercise, discipline, and it relieved a lot of stress. I still wasn't convinced.

But I'm on this mission to work out more to lose a few pounds and because exercising is relaxing for me. I'm a vegetarian, so I already have the healthy eating part down (minus my obsession with McDonald's hash browns and those regular iced coffees, hence the reason for losing a few pounds). After reviewing Flirty Girl Fitness for a newspaper I used to work for and then talking about the other health and relationship benefits of Flirty Girl on Examiner.com, I really enjoyed the aerobics club. I've always been a fan of working out by doing dance routines, but aerobics for me was too mundane. Flirty Girl Fitness, the only all-women's health club in Chicago that's designed to teach risqué classes like pole dancing and video vixen, did something that other health clubs didn't. Instead of having one or two classes, I finally found a health club where I couldn't decide which class to take first, so I started taking everything.

And then I landed on Hottie Body Boxing yesterday. I hadn't had a class with the instructor, Candrice, yet, and when I walked in and saw no one else there, I was thinking, "Oh my gawd, this lady is going to kill me because now she can focus on me." And then the music started, and I was hooked. I finally get why my NMU boxing associates enjoyed the sport. You get so much aggression and tension out by shadow boxing, learning the proper techniques and holds in fighting, and as soon as you put those gloves on and start swinging, you'll wear yourself out trying to get all the stress released into that punching bag. It's therapeutic. When I hear about people who go to a boxing studio to get out their frustration, I finally get it. I learned the proper way to kick, why your knuckles should be a certain way when punching, and some of this stuff was just natural from being around boys all of my life, watching them fight for fun.

At one point, the instructor went, "I love it. Are you a boxer? Great form!" while I was going at it on the punching bag. I'm not a violent person. I don't take pride in knowing how to fight or how to have good form when fighting. But it's one of those things that I think people should know as a defense mechanism, much like any other self-defense course. And I worked every single part of my body--abs, biceps, triceps, calves, thighs, neck, and the gluteus just in my stance alone. I'd definitely go back to this class. It has the best of three worlds--a stress reliever, educational techniques, and from the soreness I woke up to this morning, a fabulous (and "flirty") workout.
