As a veteran traffic reporter I have seen it all! Now I get to tell all! I love Chicago and have lived here my whole life, well almost, there was that short radio gig in Toledo, but I don't want to go there! Buckle up and enjoy the blog!

I had the craziest thought the other day.  I was driving in the suburbs and noticed traffic slowing down, no biggie your thinking, but we were all slowing down for a group of geese that were crossing the street.  I thought OMG! we will slow down for geese, but put a person infront of us and we are running them off the road!

Why is that!?!  Why are we nicer to geese!  Not, that we shouldn't be, but really have you seen what the cab drivers and cars in the city of Chicago do to pedestrians!  IT's CRIMINAL! I am often forced to run across the crosswalk, as to not get hit by a bus, car or cab!!!

Hmmm...do you think adding some geese to our expressways would help...not sure.  Slow down folks...for people too!!!

We have had a hot summer!  But, the weather for me has been about the rain and floods. When reporting about the "high standing water" and "flooded viaducts" we really mean it! I  continue to wonder why people will not listen and drive thru the water or flooded streets anyway!

A few weekends ago, we had severe down pour of rain.  Oak Park area got almost a record 8 inches within hours!  Most areas had water they had never seen and Westchester was a lake where people were rescued by boat.  Have we finally learned our lesson...I don't think so!

I drove over the Eisenhower at Desplaines Avenue that weekend and saw the flooded expressway and many cars that were sitting in the water too!  I hope those people got out safely.  So, here's my "cry"...when we say "impassable" WE MEAN IT!

I may not be an expert on most things...but I do know about traffic and the weather and sometimes the two just don't go together!  So PLEASE listen when we tell you "do not enter"!...Next trains...crossing gates...and well...you see where this is going.

Eisenhower is up and running! Well...almost! Drivers enjoying the expressway again!

Well, can you believe it!  The 290/Eisenhower is up and running...well almost!  I was so surprised when I got on Saturday and realized I was moving in the 3 newly paved lanes. I then realized that every driver was going to posted speed limit 75 or 80!  Funny!

I am still amazed that even during this construction period, no one really paid attention to the reduced speed limit.  Drivers only slowed down, when they had to, through the reduced lanes of traffic!

I wish I had a "megaphone" to shout out!  We all really need to pay attention to the rules, the speed limit, and of each other on the Chicago expressways and tollways.  Its summer and I am afraid for the younger drivers that are out there.  They are not "seasoned" enough to handled the rough roads...and I don't mean roadwork!

Let's help these young, new drivers and pay attention out there!  If you do see a crazy lady with a "megaphone" out there...give me a wave...I am just trying to do my part!

Lipstick, Latte and Merging onto the Expressways! Getting Ready in your CAR!

I would like to think that I have mastered the art of doing my make-up, drinking my coffee all while I am merging onto the expressway.  But, now that I am trying to be this safe driver and writing about it, I really need to be an example.  So, I have tried to put my lipstick on before I pull out of the drive way and my coffee is in its holder.  I think I am doing pretty good!

I have seen many women, mostly doing this, getting ready in their cars and I have to say it does look ridiculous.  BUT, the other day I saw this guy shaving while he was driving and I just had to laugh.  I slowed down to look at him and he rolled down his window and asked..."Did I miss anything?"...I said no...but you might miss that car in front of you if you care to stop primpin'.  I don't think he liked my response, as he drove off, I said to myself are we ALL NUTS!  Are we all this VAIN! ...that we have to constantly groom ourselves!

Here's what I am thinking, get ready at home, and you will be ready to look great in your car! Now, doesn't that sound way to easy!  Try it and let me know how it works out for you!

SALT and HEADLIGHTS! Safe Drivers turn on their Headlights!

In trafficland we have, what we call, our traffic tip lines.  These lines are always busy and calls range from giving us a tip on an accident to weather related items.  One of my favorite calls came the other night when someone told us we should tell EVERYONE to turn on their headlights!!!  It was a rainy night and this person was upset that it was hard to see some of the cars without their lights on.

I think this is a great idea and a safe one.  If the weather conditions are bad, like rain, fog, or snow, no matter what time of day it is we should all turn on our headlights.  This now raises another question, how do we let someone know how to turn them on?  Not everyone is listening to the radio. So, do we honk, roll down our window and tell them. OR do we use the famous flashing our headlights and then they should know to turn on theirs.  I know we are all smart drivers, but sometimes we just forget to do the safe things when we get in our cars.

Here's what you should think of when you get in your car...SALT...!

S-Seat belts, A- Adjust mirrors, L- Lights on, T- Turn your phone off!

Now if we can only get drivers to stop flashing those brights!  Drive Safe!

OPRAH! I need your help! Expressways and Texting!

Recently, Oprah put out an "All States Bulletin" asking us to all stop texting and using our cellphones while driving.  I totally agree with her and now I am asking for her help!  I was almost run off the expressway the other day by someone on their cellphone.  As they passed me, they used that popular hand gesture, and drove pass speeding away.

I was so mad, and said to myself, I am going to take down their license plate number.  Now, I know what you all are thinking, how can I write this down and drive at the same time.  Well, I did!

AND, this got me thinking, why don't we all start paying closer attention to those license plate numbers.  Could there be a way we can turn these drivers into the state or state police?  Maybe these crazy drivers could be put on a "watch" list and pulled over if the authorities see them talking and driving!  I know, this sounds like a lot of work on our part, but we need to pull together on this issue!

Oprah! HELP!  Can we issue all cars a mini-recorder so we can shout the numbers into the recorder and write the number down later!  This is a very important issue and we need to take charge and become safer drivers!  I love my job,but one thing I would love to stop saying is accidents with injuries...all lanes shutdown!

4-way Stop. You Go, No You Go! Stop Signs are Confusing!

The 4-way stop, it can be so confusing at a stop sign, no one ever knows who should go first.

BUT, even more confusing at an intersection where traffic signals are out or flashing red. What do you do?  Who has the right of way? AND throw in a turn lane and its all up for grabs!

Well, lets first start with treating that intersection as a 4-way stop.  The person, or car, to your right should have the right-of-way. But, what if turn lanes are involved and it simply becomes so overwhelming that we all pull out at the same time and begin beeping our horns.

I was in this situation at the intersection of Rte 83 & North Ave. OMG! Talk about intersection of intersections.  Everyone feels their lane is the "go" lane.  I got caught up in a war of "who goes first" where I found myself in the middle, almost got hit, and just closed my eyes and drove right through. For a second, I almost felt like I was in an Italian movie, so many hand gestures.  So mature, I know, what was I thinking!

EXACTLY! No one is thinking!  So folks, just a reminder, when you encounter that 4-way stop or intersection, let the car to your right go and save yourself the headache! Or...use one of those Italian hand gestures...that could work too!

Trucks and Cars on the road. Which Lane is the Truck Lane?

As a veteran traffic reporter I have seen it all! Now I get to tell all! I love Chicago and have lived here my whole life, well almost, there was that short radio gig in Toledo, but I don't want to go there! Buckle up and enjoy the blog!

With all this construction on the Chicago expressways, its hard to stay in the lanes.  Sometimes, the new configuration takes us from 3 lanes to 2 lanes without much notice.  As I continue to travel the roadwork areas my confusion is with the trucks, or semi trucks, as we call them.

These HUGE, larger-than-life, trucks that are going so fast and pushing me out of the way into other lanes, the problem, there aren't other lanes to be pushed to!  So, as as result, I am almost run off the road.

I started to think again, about the rules of the road, and is there a lane just for trucks or a lane that trucks should never be in...EVER!  I thought as a traffic reporter I should know this, but as I asked around trafficland, no one really knew the answer.  So, which lane is the truck lane?

Here's the answer I found, trucks should not be in the left lane, only to use the left lane if they are passing.  REALLY, does this work for the construction zone too? AND, more importantly do the truck drivers know this?  Here's the problem, when you are down to 2 lanes on the expressway and 2 trucks are behind you, it sure seems like all lanes are theirs!

So, I am asking for help, if you know this answer or know a truck driver, send them my way.  I would LOVE to tell them what lane I think they should be in. Be safe little cars!

Eisenhower Expressway Construction Rules! The Ike! Ouch!

Ok, I have lived in Chicago my whole life and I'm a veteran traffic reporter, who believe me, has seen and reporter it all. Well, at least I think I had seen it all!  I can't tell you how this 290/Eisenhower construction project has affected people all over the city and the suburbs.  Everyday on the air, I tell people, "SLOW DOWN...state police and Chicago police patrol the roadwork zones so pay attention!"  AND everyday when I drive on the Eisenhower I am amazed no one is listening to me.

I find myself having to keep up with traffic in the construction zone, which is for everyones information, the entire Eisenhower Expressway!  I have people beeping and flashing lights behind me.  Are you kidding me, does everyone NOT see the posted speed limit sign of 45mph!

I'm not sure how to handle my frustration with the drivers in Chicago. But, we all better think of some way to take charge. I am telling you that the $375 fine is not pretty and the troopers are not smiling at this type of driving.

All of this has got me thinking, why don't we pay attention to the rules of the road?  Why are we looked at as a "whimp" if we actually go the speed limit?  So, call me a traffic nerd or traffic diva, either way I'm spending that $375 on some cold summer beverages!  Be safe and SLOW DOWN!
