Running food is so freaking delicious.
After a recent visit with my nutritionist friend Katy, I made a startling discovery: running food is only beneficial to you when you are going for a run.
Allow me to explain. You see, in the running world, there are these magical treats called "Clif bars." According to the package, some dude named Gary had a dad named Clif and they exercised together which somehow led to this delicious, delicious bar.
Bull.
There is a no way a health nut that sweated through the Sierra Nevada Mountains came up with this bar choc-full of fatty goodness like chocolate and peanut butter. Whoever this Gary dude is, I'm pretty sure he stole the recipe from the back of a Nestle's chocolate chip package. Regardless- the bar's amazing. So amazing in fact, that I foolishly believed it would be a great substitute for a morning meal. All 42g of carbs. Plus protein.
Turns out that's not the case. Katy says that these bars are only to be eaten before intense workouts (like a 10-mile run, not a quick sprint to the train).
How the hell was I supposed to know!? I mean, seriously these things taste like a breakfast bar (only better). So what if I'm eating a day's worth of carbs before I get to work --- I'm running, right? That should account for all my calories consumed in a day...no? Huh.
Now that I'm weary of the deliciousness that comes with running foods, I'm staying away from these high-carb goodies unless I'm running further than the end of the block.
... but, I did just take a small bite into a Shot Block (gelatin chews runners eat for bursts of electrolytes). They taste like Gushers. Maybe I should run some more.

haha, Clif Bars are cycling food, silly. runners only eat them because they don't know any better.

I like shot blocks. I think Power Bar makes a version of them that are even tastier and actually have an oozy center like gushers =)

Yes. nutrition is something you need to know "if" you are going to run the marathon. I only train with Clif products, they are amazing for keeping you going in all kinds of racing and training conditions.
Also, not sure who your friend is, but if you are missing a meal, because you don't have time, this is a great way to supply you with nutrient. However, I recommend staying away from anything too candy bar like, if you do the marathon. Your body has a tendency to reject these sweet treats.
I train with their more tame flavors and never have any GI problems.
