Chicago 2016: A Play By Play
I was among the several thousand people this morning who congregated in Daley Plaza for the 2016 Olympic bid announcement. The day started with excitement, hope, and anticipation, but you probably know by now how it ended. I tweeted and twitpic'd as the events unfolded so even if you couldn't get down there you can get a sense of what it was like.
- Took the Blue Line to Clark & Lake and it was surprisingly quiet
- Media trucks have taken over Clark Street
- Chicago 2016 central: Daley Plaza
- The water in the Daley Plaza fountain is dyed orange!
- Note: stay away from southwest corner of Daley Plaza!
- Just ran into @marcus5000 roaming Daley Plaza & filming live 4 NBC. I told him I want the Olympics so I can tell the WORLD where to go! :-)
- This girl's got the Chicago 2016 spirit!
- And so does the Picasso!
- Here's @marcus5000 doin' his thang for NBC5
- Marion Brooks commented that ppl are using recycled Cubs W signs. Woman next to me said "don't jinx it!" Ha!
- Voting has started! Crowd is quiet, waiting with bated breath.
- Crazy - a crowd this size is almost silent.

- The rules are being explained. Oh, the tension!
- Vote is closed. And the 1st to be eliminated is ....
- Chicago. The crowd is shocked. Shocked.
- Audible gasp in Copenhagen. Audible groan in Chicago.
- The crowd is milling about but starting to disperse. Still quiet, but murmuring shock & subdued indignation.
- At Corner Bakery to get some work done. Still reeling, not so much that we didn't get it, but that we were 1st out.
Shortly after that we learned that Rio was chosen, which didn't really come as a surprise. Everyone was still mainly shocked that Chicago was the first one voted out. Steph Yiu collected other Twitter reactions, and you can see more pictures on my Flickr account.
