A few helping hands and a case of Old Style.

WGN Radio host John Williams (Monday-Friday 9a-12p, 720 AM) held a special ceremony tonight, lighting "The People's Tree." When John heard that the city of Chicago spends $100,000 on setting up a Christmas tree in Daley Plaza every year, his eyebrows raised like most of his audience.

Who could blame the city for thinking of passing on this year? John decided to take matters into his own hands and set up his very own tree. He asked his audience to chip in. A man quickly called and donated the tree itself. Next came the lights from Ace Hardware, and the ornaments from all of his listeners.

Today the tree was officially opened for business. I was there live on WGN News, John joined me to talk about it.
