Like so many of us, Michael Farney was captivated by the infamous "Christmas Lights Gone Wild" viral video that swept the world a few years ago. It inspired him to create an action-packed display at his home in suburban Forest Park.

Last night, Michael officially debuted this season of Forest Park Lights, a stunning display featuring thousands of bulbs, dozens of glowing skulls, laser lights, rotating video projectors, flat screen televisions, inflatable monsters, and a grand finale fireworks display.

I'm out of breath just typing it.

The entire setup is choreographed to popular Halloween music, seven songs in total. The music plays from speakers embedded in the yard, and the house thumps, glows, and almost sings along with the beat. But if you're a bit too frightened to leave your vehicle, you can tune to 99.1 FM. Michael is broadcasting the music there. He told me it carries less than 200 feet, which makes it legal.
I asked Michael what his electric bill was like. Surprisingly, it's not that much higher than his normal usage. Because the lights go on and off on cue, they never glow constantly. This cuts back on his use of power, leaving him to pay an extra $50 for the month. Not bad, considering the video you see above.

As an added bonus, this year the audience can actually request a song. All you have to do is call the request line (708-488-4898) and select a song from the list found on the website. It will bump your request to the top of the queue.

The reaction to Michael's display has been mostly positive. While we were there, about four families stopped to take a look. They all were enthused, especially the children, who kept yelling for their favorite skeleton or spider to make a glowing appearance.

Over the top? Absolutely, but when I asked Michael why he takes an entire week off work to set this production up, he had the perfect answer.

"We're making memories here," he said. "You know when you were a little kid, you always went out with your family, and there was always that house that you had to go to every year because it was decorated over the top. And you know what? That's this house."

He smiled. Happy Halloween.

Now have fun taking all of that stuff down.
