In what can only be termed an anticlimactic announcement, Cubs manager Lou Piniella confirmed that he will be retiring at the end of the 2010 season (what some have called the "2010 campaign," evidently akin to the Walter Mondale's 1984 presidential campaign -- "Where's the Beef?" indeed).
Yes, kids, Lou is not just leaving the Cubs, but he is leaving baseball altogether. After 18 years as a player and 23 years as a manager (with at least one thrown base, against the Cubs, no less), Sweet Lou is hanging up the ol' cleats for the last time. Why, you say? The oldest reason in the book, says Lou in his official statement:
It will enable me to spend more valuable time with my family -- my wife, my kids and my grandchildren.
