Wednesday Headlines: Did Gordo Get the Scoop?

(Chicago Tribune Photo)

Gordon Wittenmyer's back after a month off with a bombshell. Posted at 2:32 am Central, Gordo says the Cubs are on the cusp of acquiring Matt Garza via trade.

The Cubs appear to have moved past the Texas Rangers and into the driver's seat in efforts to acquire Tampa Bay Rays 15-game winner Matt Garza -- a potential move that could put the Cubs back into the National League Central title conversation for 2011.

A major-league source said Tuesday the Cubs were close to trading for the power-pitching right-hander, just as the Rangers were committing a big multiyear deal to third baseman Adrian Beltre and appeared to be pursuing free-agent closer Rafael Soriano. Those efforts come after the Rangers fell short in their efforts to use the money to keep big-ticket free-agent pitcher Cliff Lee.

Gordo doesn't give us any hints as to who might be going to the Rays, though.

Also, MLBTR brings us news that isn't really news.

The Cubs are not planning to upgrade at second base, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (via Twitter). That makes it unlikely that they'll pursue Michael Young.

There's been no hint of an upgrade at second this offseason, and Michael Young is going to make $16 million. Any surprise here?

Why am I worrying? After 4weeks of unhappiness at Jim's inability to competently put together something competitive for 2011 (and watching the Brewers skate on by with a reconstructed rotation) - and a complete lack of rumour on MLBTR - I am now fretting that he is going to handover the keys to the farm to sign Zambrainless Mark2. The life of a Cubs fan seemingly can never be a happy one!

Chris Archer is certain to be included. I am okay with that, so long as we keep McNutt. Archer hs taken some time to develop, and his walk totals are still high. I like Garza a lot. He's going to get even better.

In a Garza trade, I think it is a given that Archer would be shipped away. I would also assume one of the middle infield prospects would go (Lee or Barney).

Personally, I'm not nearly as high on Garza as a number of other people are. I don't think this is a trade that improves the team significantly. Garza would probably be the #3 starter on this team...forcing Silva or Wells into the bullpen. I don't see that has a significant upgrade.

Well, it's starting to look like Wittenmeyer made the whole thing up.

I think Garza is a strong #2 starter, but he'd be on a rotation with no ace. Dempster and Zambrano can both be #2 type starters also, but we've seen both of their numbers slide, and we have no reason to have faith that either one of them is going to be consistently strong. At least with Garza, you can point to consistency and health, plus he's succeeded in a very tough division. Lacking an ace on the market, you cannot actually do much better.

I am hanging some future hopes for an ace on 21 year-old Trey McNutt. Two seasons, 14-2. 107 hits in 144 IP. 160 Ks, 52 walks. ERA 2.19. These are crazy numbers. We cannot let go of this kid. I'm glad he's not being mentioned much, but by the end of next summer, everyone will want him included in a deal.

I thought MLB was creating a minor league and the Cubs were being placed there(kind of like in soccer where a team can be removed from the Premier League due to a poor record)

Rebuilding?!?! The Cubs are not rebuilding. That will come after the big contracts are gone. Still a couple of years off.

This is just biding time.

flyball said:

I wanted rebuilding now, I wanted to let a couple of the big contracts run out, keep new costs low and let some young guys get a little experience, not a fire sale type rebuilding, but still

I am really sick of this idea every season of being 1 player away from contention, its always, 1 big trade, 1 big free agent signing, whatever, its so frustrating because I'd rather watch decent baseball all season long than a couple of streaks that are balanced by complete tanking, consistency breads success

More like a patch-up then a tear-down...

demolition is necessary in most good renovation projects

So basically, in a Garza trade, we lose good young prospects to replace Ted Lilly.

Doc said:

I believe Garza is not quite as consistent as Ted Lilly...but he can, at times, be much more dominating.

On can't discount the fact that Garza has been pitching in the AL East for his entire career...but yes, we would be trading away good young prospects to replace Ted Lilly. Garza will be cheaper than Lilly, and is right handed. But I don't see this as a wise trade.

fwiw everything that I hear coming from the east coast AL East types is that Garza is sticking around

Tell the Chicago sportswriters that...I've been preaching that for months.

would you be shocked that find out that Chicago writers don't listen to me?

Doc said:

Well...they listen to some much less animated objects than you, so I am a bit surprised.

Blyleven & Roberto Alomar elected to Hall of Fame. Mixed feelings-still ticked about Santo, but at least someone was voted in...

Huge injustice that Barry Larkin must wait another year.
