Wednesday Headlines: Cubs Welcome Back Another Legend

As was noted in yesterday's thread, another former Cub will be making the rounds at spring training this year. Let's all give a hearty welcome to non-roster invitee Todd Wellemeyer.

Well, spring-training mornings around Fitch Park should be fun as Carlos Zambrano walks through the clubhouse and yells, "Shoulders!" about 10 times every day. "Shoulders" was Big Z's nickname for pitcher Todd Wellemeyer, whom the Cubs are in the process of signing to a minor-league contract with an invite to spring training.

One report had Wellemeyer getting $800,000. The Cubs aren't confirming that, and he'll likely get the 800 Gs only if he makes the team.

Wellemeyer joins an already motley crew of non-roster invitees this spring.

It'll be an interesting and fun group of non-roster invitees: Scott Moore (another guy on his second tour of duty with the Cubs after originally coming from the Tigers along with Bo Flowers and Roberto Novoa for Kyle Farnsworth in Feb. 2005); Reed Johnson (ditto that on the second tour of duty); Bobby Scales; Angel Guzman and Bryan LaHair.

Has anyone seen Les Walrond?

Those, of course, are in addition to former first-round bust Luis Montanez. Maybe Kevin Millar will come around again, too.

Also first reported in yesterday's thread, the State of Illinois is giving you a new means to display your love of the Cubs.

The Illinois Secretary of State's office on Wednesday will begin selling Cubs-themed license plates for $69, with proceeds benefitting Illinois schools. The plates will have a Cubs royal-blue background and team logo.

Is that $69 total, or in addition to the normal plate fees? I paid about $260 for regular plates this year in Indiana. I guess that's the foil to lower income, property and sales taxes.

I saw the words "Roberto" and "Novoa" next to each other, and I almost passed out.

I'm still waiting for the return of the greatest Cubs pitcher of my lifetime...Ryan O'Malley.

He did have one hell of a game...

I read somewhere that he basically just completely self destructed after that and is pretty much out of baseball now.

The next start he gave up 3 runs in 4.2 innings. For a career ERA of 2.13...As of December 2009 he was the pitching coach for the Arizona League Rangers...grew up in Springfield, IL

I still remember Todd Wellemeyer's rookie debut. Bottom of the 17th, we've just taken a 1-run lead, but we're out of other pitchers, so in comes a guy who's never pitched in the big leagues before... and he struck out the side for the save. Only Cub ever to get a save in his big league debut.

Well, to be honest, I mainly remember it because my family and I were watching it while on vacation during Myrtle Beach... and it was motorbike week, and the bikes kept zooming past our hotel well past 1 in the morning. But still, it was one of those performances that put him instantly at "top-five favorite current Cubs" status, and I was disappointed when we first traded him.

am I the only one surprised that they are just coming up with a Cubs license plate now? and is there a White Sox one too? they would have made a lot more money if they had done this in 2004 or something

I believe the state of Illinois has made this option available for teams and organizations for a number of years now. If my memory is correct, the Blackhawks were the first to take advantage of this and they just started doing it a few months ago.

The Cubs need to bring back Todd Walker and Todd Van Poppel too so Todd Ricketts can have some company. Instead of fielding an entire team of 2b it will be an entire team of guys named Todd or Carlos.

Since the Cubs have a player with the nickname "shoulders" which Cubs will earn the nicknames,"elbows',"knees", and of course, "toes"..

Get back Mark Prior and we have "calves".

And Ryan Theriot and we have "dick"...

that wasn't quite the gender I would have put him under.

I'm guessing he's gender-neutral.

Actually, given his whining, the body part that best describes him is north of his calves...

Sorry, Sloan-but that insults donkeys everywhere. Jarowcliff's first label was more accurate...

Oh, good morning from too sunny So Cal-where we can hardly wait for MLB to tell the Parking Lot attendant to either make nice with the ex or sell the Dodgers to someone who knows baseball..

I'm looking forward to that day with the Tom Ricketts and his wife.

Speaking of which, when will Tom Ricketts's wife be replacing Crane Kenney as team president?

I am now the proud owner of a Cubs license plate!

Congratulations! Now everyone will know of your steadfast devotion to the Cubs! By the way, do you get any bonuses with the purchase? You know, like a bumper sticker to go with the plate?

jarowcliffe said:

user-pic

No bonuses that I know of, this is the state of illinois we are talking about. I dont think they have extra funds for bonuses.

Finally, someone who can answer the question of what the total cost is.

jarowcliffe said:

It was $119.25 to switch from existing regular plate.

This is the link to the site with the fee schedule.
