Wednesday Headlines: Arbitration Schmarbitration

(Chicago Tribune Photo by Brian Casella)

Remember last year when Ryan Theriot went all the way to his arbitration hearing and lost? Don't expect that to happen with any Cubs player this year. Every arb-eligible player is now signed, with the exception of Carlos Marmol.

General manager Jim Hendry took a big step Tuesday toward ensuring that won't happen when he agreed to terms with pitchers Matt Garza, Sean Marshall and Tom Gorzelanny, who is in the process of being traded to Washington.

Although closer Carlos Marmol filed for arbitration, Cubs insiders appeared confident the two sides will agree to terms before a hearing can take place next month. Marmol is seeking $5.65 million, while the Cubs are offering $4.1 million.

Geo Soto also signed.

The Cubs also made official their one-year, $3 million deal with catcher Geovany Soto, who also avoided salary arbitration.

And today could be the day we say our final goodbyes to Tom Gorzelanny.

Gorzelanny, who will take a physical exam Wednesday in Washington, received $2.1 million, a raise from the $800,000 he made with the Cubs last year.

If Gorzelanny passes the physical, the two teams will make official a deal that will send the left-hander to the Nationals for three minor-league prospects. Washington would then pay the pitcher's salary.

With the arbitration eligible players signing, we're starting to get a good look at where the Cubs' payroll will land come opening day.

Including Marmol's projected salary, easily attained incentive bonuses built into reliever Kerry Wood's $1.5 million deal and another $8 million or so to pre-arbitration players and minor-league free agents who might make the team (such as outfielder Reed Johnson), the Cubs' 25-man Opening Day payroll figures to be just more than $130 million. That would represent roughly a 10 percent cut from the opening total last season.

Finally, the sad saga of Milton Bradley continues with a recent felony arrest.

Bradley was arrested at 10:40 a.m. at a residence in Encino, Calif., about two hours after police received a call from an unidentified woman in the Van Nuys district of Los Angeles saying a man had threatened her, the paper reported.

Bradley was booked on a felony charge of making criminal threats and released after he posted $50,000 bail, the paper reported. His next court date is set for Feb. 8.

Bradley attempted to assault a souvenier baseball the woman owned with a bat. But, of course, he missed.

The ball, or the fan?

I just want to say that the next time I say that a player's actions are consistent with the jackwagons I see in court on a regular basis, I will expect more people to listen.

That is all.

gravedigger said:

I don't think anyone was saying that you weren't right about that. Just that it might not matter.

And in the end, felonies were the least of his problems in his short Cubs career.

JulieDiCaro said:

Oh, I remember quite a few guys saying 'he wasn't charged! that means she probably made it up!"

I have seen the world, people. Just accept it.

Anyway, my point wasn't that we shouldn't sign him because he's an asshole, it was that he seemed like the special KIND of asshole who eventually has his assholishness (not to Whit Stillman) affect his job.

Someone want to come do my job for me? I really don't feel like it today, and have other things to occupy my time.

JulieDiCaro said:

Me either.

Also, I have a headache.

Teebob2000 said:

Does it involve just dicking around doing nothing to a significant degree? If so, I've already got my job for that.

gravedigger said:

No. I was actually just told that if I didn't get this paragraph of information it would hold up the President's budget.

On the one hand, it is kind of cool that I could have that kind of power.

On the other hand, it presents the sad reality that it is an empty threat and that I do not, indeed, have that kind of power.

Just read on Twitter that Soriano's mom passed away last night. Condolences to the Soriano family. :(

Went home yesterday to look at new Tv configuration through At&t. The good news- I get NFL Network; the bad news-no MLB Network. I also get the YES network which of course every CA viewer wants: to see what a real front office looks like......

flyball said:

user-pic

do you get NESN? I think NESN and YES should have a rivalry

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Nope- We changed because Time Warner loser Cable was going to hike our rates again, and the service kept cutting out. The final straw was when the phone service went out-my mom is 87 years old, and their customer service did not seem to care we would not have 911. At&t will at least have the phone on a phone line-not cables which go out a lot here....

I checked -NESN is not availible in CA. I guess they figure YES is enough for East Coast fans...

a payroll cut? I never thought it would actually happen

keywestcubfan said:

Yeah, a whole 10 percent. We get one game from Soriano for free this year. Too bad about his mom though. Sounds like it was unexpected.

If Doug Glanville gets Ronnie's job, I get credit:

@dougglanville: Let's credit CubbieJulie for sending out to the masses about the WGN Radio idea! Thanks for the love!

keywestcubfan said:

Glanville is a great idea! Does he want the job?

JulieDiCaro said:

I brought it up to him at Cubs Con and he laughed and said "I don't even know where that rumor CAME from." But now he seems interested. . .

See how I can worm my ideas right into people's heads?

Hmmm... Now who was it that mentioned Glanville's name first again? Hmmm.....

the Nats have signed Jerry Hairston. Are the Nats being allowed a 127-man roster this year?

secdelahc said:

user-pic

It sounds as though the Nats are going to be another team where former Cubs go to die. Like the Pirates and Orioles.

ELRaythar said:

or the Cubs

flyball said:

its the little known attachment to the agreement the league made with Angelos to allow the Expos to move to DC, he gets guaranteed value of the Orioles, and the Nationals have to take 30% of ex-Cubs players that would otherwise go to Baltimore

baturkey said:

$130 million last year would have made the Cubs the third highest payroll in the NL (behind Phillies and Mets) instead of the first.
