Monday Headlines: Moving Day/Happy Birthday, Mr. Cub

It's moving day! Everyone grab a box on their way out, and take it to:

http://www.aleagueofherown.com

If you use that URL tomorrow, it will automatically redirect you to your new digs. Don't forget to bring a housewarming gift. We're registered at Crate & Barrel.

Just because we're moving doesn't mean the Cubs have stopped making news. MLBTR broke the news last week that two Cuban players have agreed to sign.

The Cubs have reached agreements to sign a pair of Cuban players, MLBTR's Nick Collias has learned.  They'll be signing outfielder Ruby Silva for $1.2MM as well as catcher Yaniel Cabezas for $500K.

Silva, 21, is a versatile left-handed hitter who played center field for the champion Havana Vaqueros in the 48th Cuban National series.  He can play all three outfield positions and perhaps even the middle infield.  He's a good athlete who draws praise as a plus runner with a plus arm.  He could begin his pro career in low A ball with the Peoria Chiefs.

Cabezas is a catch-and-throw backstop who reminds some of a young Yadier Molina, though his bat has improved in the last year.

Dave Van Dyck is worried about Tyler Colvin and John Grabow heading into Spring Training.

When the Cubs gather next month in Mesa, Ariz., Tyler Colvin and John Grabow will have more to prove than most -- to themselves and the team.

Neither is quite sure what to expect. Colvin is overcoming mental scars from a bat impaling his chest, and Grabow is overcoming the physical uncertainty of a nagging knee injury.

I would imagine that Tyler has physical scars from it, too, since it did impale his chest and puncture his lung. And while I understand that it was a frightening experience, does anyone think he's run screaming the first time he sees a bat?

"I don't think it (will affect me)," Colvin said of possible fears about a repeat of the flying bat that sent him to the hospital. "I couldn't foresee that happening again. I'm not going to go out there and play scared. I'm just going to play like (I do) every day."

(snip)

"It's a pretty scary moment," he admitted, "when you think about going to the hospital and they're going to fly you in a helicopter. I'm glad it's over with and I'm healthy and ready for this year."

Seems like Tyler has a pretty good perspective on it. I'm not so worried. As for the John Grabow situation, I'm not so much worried that he'll not have recovered from his knee injury, I'm worried that he will have recovered.

Grabow's case is different but the same. He needs to be mentally sure his left knee has healed from nearly yearlong soreness that ended his season June 28, and he needs to regain the confidence of an organization that gave him a two-year, $7.5 million contract.

"I never really had an injury before, and it came right after I signed the contract," Grabow said, "so I'm looking to redeem myself."

But Grabow wants to be part of what he expects to be a sensational year for our Cubs.

"I'm going to throw in the brace until I feel comfortable where it's not an issue," he said. "But if I have to wear it all season, I will because this could be a real special year for our team."

World Series, here we come! Who will call the World Series along with Pat in the radio booth? It's down to two finalists.

Barring a late development, former Cubs Keith Moreland and Dave Otto are the finalists for the spot in the booth next to play-by-play man Pat Hughes, a source told the Chicago Tribune.

Lastly, as you might have noticed in the headline, today is Ernie Banks' 80th birthday. Happy Birthday, Mr. Cub.

I'm worried that WE haven't sufficiently recovered when it comes to Grabow.

I'm not sure why Van Dyke thinks Grabow needs to prove anything. He's getting paid $4.8 million this year...guaranteed. That's as much as he should expect to make over the next 3 seasons combined! He'll be 32 this season...33 when he hits free agency. It would be foolish for him to think that he could top the 2 year contract the Cubs gave him. So regardless of how he does this season, he's going to take a hit in 2012 with his salary.

Oh...and did I mention that Grabow gets $4.8 million this season? That is regardless of how well he pitches.

Something to prove? All he's going to prove is that the Cubs were stupid to give him that contract. Oh...and he makes $4.8 million this season.

Alright now,who gave Grabow a copy of "The Secret"?

Today is not only Ernie Banks' birthday, it's also Jackie Robinson's birthday. And Yuniesky Betancourt's birthday. One of these things is not like the others...

Doc said:

user-pic

Yeah...Betancourt is a communist. Banks and Robinson are, to our knowledge, not.

PsyMar1 said:

user-pic

Somehow while looking up the birthday list I missed Nolan Ryan. Oh well, he's a jerk anyway. Helluva pitcher, but a jerk.

Teebob2000 said:

Aw, c'mon -- anybody who clocks a White Sox player like he did deserves our respect, if not outright love!

And, I'd add he's a helluvan owner, too.

Doc said:

My favorite pitcher of all-time...and that would be true even if he hadn't decked any White Sox players.

Over at Aisle424, Time is looking for reasons to be excited about the season. I've offered that we have more Carloses than anyone else.

Other ideas?

Doc said:

Yet another fresh coat of paint in the bathrooms?

flyball said:

no expectations means no disappointment,

actually i'm excited for a rough April, followed by a mediocre May, with a flash of decent games in June, a win streak in mid July, the trading of the last of the farm system in late July (probably to the Phillies because that is a whole week of stories about reunions with Sandberg just waiting to happen) and then a return to reality in August and a complete lack of interest from fans in September, they should refer to this as the Cubs Curve

You left out the Chicago sports media either:A. hating the new radio guy and or B. Loving the new radio guy, until they realize the Cubs will play the same.....

berselius said:

user-pic

They'll be too busy using Carlos Zambrano as a punching bag to worry about Moreland or Otto. Besides, the sports media never picks on their own.

There is no better day of the year than Opening Day of Cubs Baseball. Every year.

That's what I'm looking forward to. Real games with real players, and a fresh start, where there is at least a snowball's chance in hell of this team winning a pennant or a wildcard. This day has promise. It's getting closer.

PS. I am cold. There is an Arctic cold front headed your way, folks, it's already here in Colorado. Coldest day in 33 years.

I actually have to agree...I'll still be lurking around CN...there are a number of decent blogs on here. CN is a great place for reading stuff...not so much for commenting.
