A League of Her Own

LOHO Leaving Chicago Now to Launch G9 Sports

breaking-news.jpg
So here's the big announcement:

After a lot of  soul-searching and thought, my trusty sidekick gravedigger and I have decided to start our own blog network. Pat has graciously offered his time and talent in our newly-created "graphics department," which he is heading up.

The new network, G9sports.com, will be much like other networks in that it will feature a homepage, a designated homepage for each sport, and individual team blogs for each and every professional sports team (and, down the road, some college teams). But G9 Sports will be different in one major respect: every single blog on the network will be run by a woman.

For the last month, Mark and I have been scouring the internet looking for the smartest, wittiest, sassiest female sports bloggers around. To date, we have about 30 girls signed up and it's a pretty impressive list, if I do say so myself. These aren't girls who want to cover everything pink and bedazzle it. These girls are serious, die-hard, uber-knowledgeable sports fans who happen to be women. Honestly, until I became active on Twitter, I

I had no idea there were so many of us out there. Like Rose O'Donnell said in this site's namesake movie: "Always made me feel like l was wrong. Like l was some sort of a weird girl or a strange girl... ...or not even a girl, just because l could play. I believed them too. But not anymore. l mean, look. There"s a lot of us."

Indeed there are a lot of us. . .  a whole lot of us. "G' for "Girls," and "9" as a nod to "Title IX," without which many of us wouldn't be interested in sports to begin with. Can you dig it? I knew that you could.

Of course, this also means LOHO will be leaving ChicagoNow and becoming part of G9 Sports. Not a lot will change, but we are building a site that will allow us to have many of our old features back: the ability to post photos and video, sig lines, the ability to format your comments, user diaries, the ability to readily identify new comments, and the ever-popular "who's online" feature. Oh, and you may have to register again (ducks and covers), but this will be the last time. . . cross my heart and hope to die.

The decision to leave ChicagoNow was not an easy one for me. Everyone I've worked with at ChicagoNow has been a tremendously talented and I will miss many of them terribly. I will always be grateful for the opportunities that came my way only because of ChicagoNow. Working with/near/around the Chicago Tribune was a life-long dream of mine and I will treasure the experience forever.

So there it is . . the big news.

You're not going to make us post through Facebook now are you?
Are you going to stage an implosion of the banner?

jarowcliffe said:

user-pic

Yay! I'm excited! Congrats!!

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Oh, we're really doing this?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I thought we were. Did you not get the email?

plamorte said:

Glad to be part of it!

And please, don't use the word "talent" in the same sentence as me

Doc said:

I have to say...I'm going to miss ChicagoNow...

I'm going to miss typing a long comment and it just disappearing on me for no reason.

I'm going to miss the double and triple posts of comments.

I'm going to miss the inability to edit my comments.

I'm going to miss having to log in ever 3 minutes.

I'm going to miss being able to use only 3 or 4 different html tags.

I'm going to miss the long load times.

I'm going to miss all the features that were promised and never delivered.

And most of all, I'm going to miss being able to rip on ChicagoNow constantly.

jarowcliffe said:

user-pic

You're an angry elf...

Doc said:

user-pic

Well...yes...but what does that have to do with anything?

Brian Moore said:

user-pic

Well, I was gonna say how much I'm going to miss having LOHO on ChicagoNow and working with Julie in RedEye, but I just kind of have a bad taste in my mouth now for some reason.

Brian Moore said:

user-pic

Awww, who am I kidding. I can't get mad at you knuckleheads. Congrats and good luck and all that jazz.

plamorte said:

user-pic

i read that too fast and thought it'd said "jizz", which would have been perfect really.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Thanks Brian--but I'm not really going anywhere. I'll still be around to harrass you on a daily basis.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

If that stuff happens now, you can blame Mark!

Doc said:

user-pic

Will you have a mobile site as well?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Mark will be able to make a mobile app, I think. Right, Mark?

gravedigger said:

user-pic

App? mmmyeah probably not. But a mobile version of the site, yes. Definitely.

Teebob2000 said:

Doc said:

user-pic

Excellent!

Teebob2000 said:

user-pic

>>having to log in ever 3 minutes

You should fix -- oh, wait.

And exactly WHAT tags do YOU need to use, Mr. Fancypants?

David Wallach said:

user-pic

Anything you need, let me know. Best of luck:)

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

thanks, buddy. ;)

Aisle424 said:

user-pic

Now I have to change the link to you on MY site. Way to make more work for me...

Doc said:

user-pic

damn...I hadn't thought about that. Geez...Thanks Julie.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Not until February 1.

BTW, I'm keeping the LOHO addy--just use aleagueofherown.com

AndCounting said:

user-pic

Congratulations, Julie! BTW, when I hear someone say they've done some "soul searching," I know assume they just listened to Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" on loop for an hour. I hope what went through your head during that hour wasn't the deciding factor.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I hate that song and I hate you for mentioning it.

AndCounting said:

user-pic

Mentioning which song? "Hey, Soul Sister"? Oh, yeah. That's the only song I mentioned.

Except now I've mentioned "Hey, Soul Sister" twice. Oops. Make that three mentions of "Hey, Soul Sister". Crap!

gravedigger said:

user-pic

For serious.

Ed Nickow said:

user-pic

How wonderful ... a new sports blog with an actual vision for what will make it different from other sports blog.

Why didn't ESPN think of that?

Doc said:

user-pic

ESPN?

Think?

BAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!!

Doc said:

user-pic

I'm looking forward to being the first person banned from the new site.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I only bam spammers.

Doc said:

user-pic

Can I still pimp my blog?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

it never occured to me for a second that you wouldn't.

Doc said:

user-pic

Just as long as I doing pimp my other site where I sell discount Viagra...I see.

secdelahc said:

user-pic

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

BTW--all the guys are coming with us and will still be writing for LOHO. I'd be lost without Carl, Pete, Adam. Jeff, . . etc. You know who you all are.

Doc said:

user-pic

Oh...I would have thought that you would be leaving Adam behind.

(I'm in kind of a mean mood today...what's with that?)

FrankS said:

user-pic

Because you're looking forward to shoveling snow tonight?

Doc said:

user-pic

Damn...that must be it...

And now I have to stress about the possibility of my wife going into labor this evening.

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

You're already missing Chicago Now...:)

Cubs Psychologist said:

user-pic

Congrats, Julie!!! Big move...I do have a question for you. What will you do when the female ESPN comes calling to G9sports.com??? I mean, you are the first of your kind. Once again, much love and mass excitement for you and the crew!!

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Thanks. :)

I don't think ESPNW and I have the same idea of what women sports fans want. I doubt they're interested in me. LOL

keywestcubfan said:

user-pic

What about Metsgirl? I think she's cool by the way, even though she's a Mets fan.

keywestcubfan said:

user-pic

Ahem: I have spoken with my wife, and when the new blog network starts, she wishes to be involved. Here is a portion of her resume. When Mark Grace was in his prime, she had the ability to enhance his chances of getting a base hit by sexually fantasizing about him. HER: "Give it to me Mark! Give it to me!!" WHAP! Base hit. Run scores. HER: "Yess! YEEESSSS!!!" ME: "YAY!.... I think...."

keywestcubfan said:

user-pic

Her involvement would only be as a poster of course. Many stories need to be told. She once saved the life of a drunken Mets fan in the Center Field Bleachers for instance...

summerguy said:

user-pic

Congrats! Like I've said everytime you have switched networks, "I'm definitely going to be more active on here."

I'm about as reliable as ChicagoNOW.

Jimmy Greenfield said:

user-pic

Julie was the first CN blogger to join us months before we launched and I'll always be grateful for all her incredibly hard work and support. I look forward to supporting G9 and watching it become a huge success.

And as sad as I am to see LOHO go, it's good to finally have a reason to set a date for my sex change operation.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I (heart) you.

Carl Heartscubs Gierhan said:

user-pic

I asked Julie about the sex change, she said I could just cross-dress until I saved enough for the operation.

summerguy said:

user-pic

Congrats! Like I've said everytime you have switched networks, "I'm definitely going to be more active on here."

I'm about as reliable as ChicagoNOW.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Did you do that on purpose, or was that just a perfect coincidence?

Cubs Psychologist said:

user-pic

CONGRATS, JULIE!!! This is some pretty big news and big move. Quick question, what will G9sports.com do when the all women ESPN comes knocking at your door?? They would love to have your website associated with them...Just a thought. Once again, CONGRATS!!

Doc said:

user-pic

I get the feeling Sarah Spain will not be knocking on Julie's door. The rest of them? Maybe.

Teebob2000 said:

user-pic

I, for one, welcome our chromosomal X-squared overlords (overladies?).

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Overchicks.

LOHO is going to be the SAME, you guys. Different web addy is all. And that's not even true if you use the http://www.aleagueofherown address.

Doc said:

user-pic

hmmm....

overchicks.com?

That sounds like a social site for guys dealing with a divorce.

Doc said:

user-pic

I think Julie should get Laura Ricketts to write a blog on the new network.

You've got connections, Julie. Get it done!

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I couldn't even get Laura to come on our podcast. My connections are getting me squat. Do you here that, Connections? Be more better!

Carl Heartscubs Gierhan said:

HackWilson09 said:

You'll WANT to shave your legs.

sloan peterson said:

It will make the spray-on tan go on easier...

Cubbieboy said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Holy Shite! Congratulations, Jules! It takes some pretty big balls to...no wait...it takes a lot of testicular forti...nope, not gonna work either. Umm, will there be boobies on the site?

Seriously, though, it takes a lot of courage to do this and kudos to you for stepping out front and doing it. I spend a lot of time thinking about what type of woman my daughter should be seeking to emulate and you are definitely Top 5. Keep on keeping on, girl.

Ok, enough of the sappy stuff.....BOOBIES!!!!!!

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Awww. Very sweet. Thank you.

Cubbieboy said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I'm a sweetie.

Soooooo, I'm thinking there needs to be some type of interwebs party/contest/show of appreciation/ ho-down in honor of the big event.

I very much realize that i haven't been on a ton so i have very little say in the matter but that's how I role.

At the very least a fundraiser for Carl's sex change.

Cubbieboy said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Damn it. "roll".

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

There IS a meetup this Friday night, you know.

HackWilson09 said:

user-pic

Congratulations, Julie! This is really a great idea.

And with your own new blog network, you'll finally have the opportunity to block people like me from joining!

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

i would never block you in a million years. your fits of rage make me giggle.

keywestcubfan said:

user-pic

Oh boy, oh boy oh boy oh boy! Whoops!! I mean, does this comment thread make me look fat?

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I go into a meeting and you DO THIS!!! Seriously, I think it's a good idea, and if the site is easier to deal with it's a win-win for all in LOHOland....

HoboHanson said:

user-pic

This is great great news. Congrats on acting on such a great idea. I cannot wait for those wonderful features from days of old. "New" comments? That'll be a freaking dream come true! I may be around more often. Better sharpen my wit.

flyball said:

user-pic

love the banner, my favorite yet

Doc said:

user-pic

but no headlines today...they must have moved to the new site already.

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

So how is the babywatch, Doc?

Doc said:

user-pic

Still waiting...trust me. I'm guessing it will come this weekend.

jarowcliffe said:

user-pic

Headlines got stuck in the snow...

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

They left out the phrase "pretty please" on the banner....

Doc said:

user-pic

That is the advertising campaign for come late March after no one buys any single game tickets.

SnowBaseball said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Very cool, and I look forward to following LOHO at the new place. Any chance you can recruit BatGirl back to blogging? I can't think of a better Twins writer--she's awesome.

flyball said:

user-pic

so rumored attendee for CubcCon, Todd Walker

Doc said:

user-pic

Oh...well then I'm going.

flyball said:

user-pic

I think they need a Todd v Carlos Family Feud style gameshow

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Then I'M going.

Doc said:

user-pic

One day after the big news...

Well...today, this place kinda sucks.

Anyway...officially now, 34 days until pitchers and catchers report.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Oh shut up. I've been in court all day. Still there, as a matter of fact.

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I figured you were doing press/television interviews as the news spreads that a smart blog is fleeing Chicago Now. Though the way the headline sounds(LOHO leaving Chicago Now) kind of sounds like a horror film....

Doc said:

user-pic

Where are the other 350 contributing editors?

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Maybe for the last day, the banner could show the letters "C" & "N" erupting in flames as a icon of Julie flees the scene in a red convertable with the new address trailing in a cloud of smoke...
Or not......

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

it's really too bad some of you guys didn't see the graphics on the old site. We had giant squids, things bursting into flames, the Cubs on life support. . . stuff we'll be able to do again when we have our own site.

Doc said:

user-pic

So are you turning this into a contest to see who can do a better job...Abe or Pat?

abe frohman said:

user-pic

Pat wins.
His graphics are awesome. I kind of hate him for that.
However, if my non-girl-ness does not prevent my joining G9, perhaps I can revive the rally platypus industry.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Blogs will be headed up by women, that's the only requirement.

As if I would create something where guys aren't welcome. Where's the fun in that?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I love them both differently, just like my dogs.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

I've been working on bigger and better things.

Doc said:

user-pic

a mobile site? ;)

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Way to compliment today's posters...:)

Dmband said:

user-pic

Congratulations CJ and friends.

I will be following, probably more so in the evening hours as its very likely work will block that site. Hopefully not!

This is the only place to go for Cubs news and I look forward to reading on the new site.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

any idea how they determine filters?

Dmband said:

user-pic

GD-

Not sure, chicagonow is literally one of the few sites I can access. Ive learned anything with sports in the title is for sure no. They refer to these as time wasting sites, I tend to think of them as motivational sites.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

if you can get into LOHO from the http://www.aleagueofherown.com addy, you should still be able to get in.
