Happy Cubs Con Day, Kids!

Guess what day it is?

Go ahead. . .  guess!

Today is the day when Cubs fans from all over huddle together for warmth, dream of spring, and wait in line for hours on end for an autograph from Dwight Smith.

Of course, we here at LOHO will have correspondents staked out all over the Chicago Hilton & Towers, live tweeting the entire convention for those of you who can't be there, including the always-entertaining "Meet The Management" Session. Given that Sam Fuld has recently been traded, this should be high comedy.

For those of you who will be in town, stop by Kitty O'Shea's tonight for a couple of pops with your favorite LOHOers. Many of your favorite beat writers are usually there, as well as various Chicago "personalities" and even some Cubs. You don't need a ticket to Cubs Con (though those are still available) to get into Kitty O'Shea's, so you really have no excuse. Flyball, baturkey, summerguy, Aisle424, AndCounting, and I will all be in attendance. Details here.

Ah, but as the sagging ticket sales for Cubs Con have shown, this team needs more than just a LOHO get-together in order to convince the fans to spend their hard-earned dough on a 5th place team:

High ticket prices, a poor economy and a fifth-place finish in 2010 have combined to kill any momentum the Cubs built during their division-winning seasons in 2007 and '08. But, as the annual Cubs Convention kicks off Friday at the Chicago Hilton, Hayward recalled a quote from a former Cubs executive when asked if the team would be able to surpass three million fans again.

"Just ask (John) McDonough," he said. "Winning makes everyone look better and solves a lot of issues."

The Cubs won't know if this team can win until the season begins in April but must sell the bulk of its tickets beforehand. A 13-game ticket package that includes the Yankees series was offered to the public on Thursday, and the Cubs aren't expecting any tickets for that series tobe available when individual-game tickets go on sale in late February.

"People who do wait for that on-sale date will most likely get shut out," Hayward said.

The Cubs' marketing plan will focus on youth, pointing to the rookie-year successes of Starlin Castro, Tyler Colvin and Andrew Cashner. An ad for the "Pick 13" plan features Castro and Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, which perhaps is an unfair comparison between a likely Hall of Famer and a still raw player who hit .300 but committed 27 errors in only 125 games.

Don't forget to tune in to Wrigley Talk Friday today at 1:00 pm CT. Tim, Adam, and I will be discussing the what we hpope to see and hear from the Cubs this weekend.

It's Friday, let's have your iPod 5.

anything to the rumor about cubs con canceling that session celebrating the northsiders annual dominance over the pirates because mlb's worst team last year beat the cubs like a drum in their 2010 meetings. just askin'

One of the things I remember from Moneyball is that it's easier to improve a player's defense than offense through coaching. Although that was at first base on not shortstop.

j/k Sat radio kicks serious ass. We bought a new car in Oct with 3 months XM free trial and my wife said we'd cancel after that, but now, pry it from her cold dead hands!! LOL

My wife loves it too. I had it in my truck and was not that impressed...there sure is a ton of commercials for being "commercial-free" One thing I do like is if you are traveling long distances, you never lose signal or get static.

We're round-tripping all the way to FLA for spring break and I was not looking forward to fighting through all the 100K-watt bible-belt "radio Jesus" stations.

At my office many of the female employees wear summer-weight clothing year round, then complain if the office temp drops below 80 degrees. Rather than try to tell them to change to a sweater, they change the thermostat. It does not help I am on floor 8, the the building is enclosed in glass....

Well...some baby news...

Assuming Jeanna doesn't go into labor this weekend, we will be going into the hospital on Wednesday to get that kid out.

I'm still quite depressed at missing CubbieCon this year, though.

Any my iPod 5:

Art School Girl - STP
Back to Chicago - Styx
Cajun Song - Gin Blossoms (ugh!)
The X-Files Theme (by whoever the hell made that up)
Kink of Comedy - REM

you should just come. I have no idea why you keep thinking your babies are coming early. you think your special? babies only come early for teenagers and people who have no idea when they got pregnant.

Doc said:

This baby is coming early...whether you want it to or not. :p

If CubbieCon was only 2 hours away from home instead of 2 1/2 hours, things would be different.

Doc said:

user-pic

Oh...and Jeanna doesn't know she's pregnant. I haven't told her yet.

sloan peterson said:

The baby hasn't come yet, because it wants to pick the astrological sign.....:)

Doc said:

user-pic

The baby hasn't come yet because it is extremely confused about which astrological sign it is going to be.

jarowcliffe said:

my son was 2 weeks early and neither of those

Doc said:

user-pic

Well, at the very best, our new baby will be one week early...as the original due date was January 25th...Jeanna's blood pressure has gotten a bit high, so they don't want this to go on too much longer, but the doctor said today, based on her dilation right now (or something...I'm not a real doctor), she is likely to go into labor at any point.

jarowcliffe said:

user-pic

My wife had the same thing...high bp and swelling so we went in 2 weeks early, while we were at the hospital tornadoes were touching down like 10 miles away and there was crazy storms so they broke her water and away we went! Good luck to you guys!

Ya know, you could be a real doctor and still not know much about obstetrics (did I spell that right?). Say a doctor is a brain surgeon. How much would he really need to know about delivering babies?

I would like to add my best wishes for the safe delivery of a healthy baby soon for the Blume family.
