Community Alert: Hendry Is Signing Football Players Again

The lat thing I want to do on this frigid Friday morning is startle anyone.

BUT:

Villanova's two-sport star Matt Szczur explained his decision to forgo a possible NFL career for a chance to become a Cubs outfielder Thursday.

Szczur, a speedy wideout who led Villanova to the NCAA football subdivision title in 2009, agreed to a $1.5 million deal with the Cubs after becoming a fifth-round pick in 2010 and playing in short-season Boise and Class-A Peoria last year.

Szczur said Cubs general manager Jim Hendry told him he wanted to see him as the starting center fielder in 2014, with Brett Jackson in left and Tyler Colvin in right.

"For him to say that, I totally believed him," he said. "He wasn't beating around the bush. That helps out a lot."

Baseball America ranked Szczur as the Cubs' No. 7 prospect, though two of the higher-ranked prospects, Chris Archer (No. 1) and Hak-Ju Lee (No. 4), were traded to the Rays in the Matt Garza deal.

Oh Matt, I don't want to burst your newly-signed bubble, but Jim Hendry also once envisioned an outfield of Corey Patterson, Felix Pie, and Jason Dubois. Look how that turned out.

Over at the Daily Herald, Bruce Miles gives us the much-sought-after details on the Grozelanny deal:

In sending Gorzelanny to Washington, the Cubs save $2.1 million in salary and free up a spot on the 40-man roster, which stands at 38. In a procedural move, the Cubs and Gorzelanny agreed to a one-year, $2.1 million contract Tuesday, avoiding salary arbitration. Washington will pay his 2011 salary.

For the 28-year-old Gorzelanny, the Cubs got three minor-league prospects: outfielder Michael Burgess, left-handed pitcher Graham Hicks and right-handed pitcher A.J. Morris.

The Cubs seem intrigued by Burgess, 22, who finished last season at Class AA Harrisburg and had a hitting line of .284/.391/.649 with 6 home runs.

And as long as we're talking about Bruce Miles, a huge thank you to Bruce for stopping by our Cubs Con Meetup last Friday night AND for always being the nicest, most-accessible, and friendliest-to-bloggers beat writer around. I think we all (heart) Bruce.

And one of the benefits of having actual people, rather than corporations, as the owners of your baseball team:

The Cubs offered long-distance condolences to outfielder Alfonso Soriano on Wednesday after his mother, Andrea, died in the city of San Pedro de Macoris from an apparent heart attack Tuesday night.

"The Cubs offer our most sincere condolences to Alfonso and his family upon the sudden passing of his mother, Andrea," the team said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Alfonso during this difficult time."

Three members of the Cubs' ownership -- majority owner Tom Ricketts and brothers Pete and Todd -- are currently in the Dominican Republic on a goodwill tour and hoped to meet with Soriano and his family as early as Wednesday to personally offer their condolences, a club spokesperson said. The Ricketts brothers spent Tuesday visiting with patients in a medical center in the Dominican after making a substantial donation to the facility, which specializes in diabetes care.

That's nice.

Hey, as long as the Ricketts are in the DR, they should take the advice of one of the fans at Cubs Convention and look around for some good baseball players.

It's a coooooooooold and windy Friday here in The Chi. Let's warm each other up with another edition of Will It Blend?

Don't breathe that!

Finally, it's Friday. So hit "shuffle" on your iPod and give us the first 5 songs that come up. No cheatsies!

Save your sphincter. I have a hunch the Packers will defeat the Steelers in the Super Bowl. That is just a hunch, not a wish. I'd much rather see the Bears do it.
If I am right, I will explain why. If not, I can hedge my bets.
