A League of Her Own

Merry Kristmas, Movie House! Merry Kristmas, Wrigleyville!

Have you been depressed? Suicidal? Thinking about ending it all over the sad, sad state of the Chicago National League Ball Club?

Fear not, LOHO Nation! Your lip is bleeding again. Zuzu's petals have been found, and Kerry Wood is a Cub again!

In what may be remembered as the Pizza Summit, Kerry Wood and Cubs general manager Jim Hendry huddled Friday night in a cramped hallway at D'Agostino's restaurant in Wrigleyville.

The two had spoken earlier that day at Ron Santo's funeral, but their second meeting at the pizza joint during a charity function for the Ryan and Jenny Dempster Foundation, was Wood's chance to make his pitch.

Wood lives in Chicago and wanted to return to the Cubs, which was no big secret. The Cubs also were known to be seeking a right-handed reliever to set up Carlos Marmol and free up Andrew Cashner for the rotation. But the Cubs' budgetary constraints, combined with Wood's strong second half with the Yankees, made the notion of a second marriage a long shot.

Yet the two agreed to a one-year deal for the relatively paltry sum of $1.5 million, giving Wood an opportunity one day to finish his career in a Cubs uniform. There will be a news conference Friday at Wrigley Field to announce the deal.

Not a smitch of temperature! Thank God Kerry was amenable to signing for the change the Ricketts family was able to find in the couch, we wouldn't want to have to cable Sam Wainwright for cash.

Does this move make the Cubs measurably better? No. Does brigning Kerry undo the damange to this ballclub done by the God-awful signings of Alfonso Soriano, Kosuke Fukudome, Kevin Gregg, and John Grabow? Certainly not.

But for now, the Cubs beloved leader is back in Cubbie Blue, all of Cubs Nation is signing "Auld Lang Syne," and all is right with the world.

As if the re-signing of Kerry Wood wasn't enough good news for a Friday morning, Cubs fans also don't have to worry about Jim Hendry bringing back Xavier Nady. It's a Christmas Miracle!

The Arizona Republic reports: Two former Cubs are headed to Arizona.

The Diamondbacks are closing in on a deal with outfielder/infielder Xavier Nady and have reached an agreement with catcher Henry Blanco.

I'm in such a good mood this morning, I won't even bring up the fact that Chicagoanshave scooged up the Ricketts' plan to charge a ticket tax to help pay for renovations to  Wrigley:

More than half of Chicago voters don't like the idea of spending future gains in city and county ticket taxes on renovating Wrigley Field, a new Tribune/WGN poll shows.

Such sentiment mirrored the General Assembly's lack of response this month to Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts' first pitch at asking for help paying for improvements to the 96-year-old ballpark.

The team's new ownership suggested using the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority, the state agency that owns the ballpark the White Sox call home, to borrow about $250 million. Under the plan, the loan would be repaid by using growth in the 12 percent amusement tax levied on tickets at Wrigley for at least 35 years.

Hrmph. It looks like someone needs to learn the true meaning of Christmas. I reccomend growing your heart three sizes today.

Speaking of growing your heart, make sure to stop by the Western Burbs meetup tonight at Quigley's in downtown Naperville to raise a glass of mulled wine to the return of Kerry Wood. I'll be there, and I'll be joined by jmkobus and plamorte!

As it's an especially Christmas-y Friday, let's have a Christmas theme to our Friday IPod Shuffle. I'll start:

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas: Chrissie Hynde

Fairytale of New York: The Pogues w/ Kristy MacColl

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home): The one and only Darlene Love

All I Want For Christmas Is You: My Chemical Romance

What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? Ella Fitzgerald

So Merry Kristmas, movie house! Merry Kristmas Emporium! Merry Kristmas, you wonderful old building and loan! Merry Kristmas, Cubs fans! And Merry Kristmas, Kerry Wood!

You know what would be great? Hendry is behind the bar, and Soriano and Fukudome are sitting on the other side, and suddenly Hendry slams down the bottle and yells, "That does it! Out you two pixies to, t'rough da door, or out the winda!"

Now that we have Kerry Wood, I'm just sitting here with a big smile on my face, with nothing to complain about. Good for my blood pressure, terrible for my blog.

I'm concerned that my good mood may be affecting my ability to stay pessimistic about this team, I don't know what this means for the Pub

Kerry Woods is good news!He can't save the team, but can definately help everyone on the pitching staff.Just got to work, no Ipod and actually I'm not real fond of Christmas music. I like "Santa Claus & his old lady" by Cheech & Chong, "Merry Xmas/War is Over" by John & Yoko and the Band Aid single. Other than that I would rather hear instrumentals. That's what you get when parents force someone to hear Christmas songs continuously while growing up and being made to see every Xmas movie availible at the time...

By the way, Fontenot shaved off his facial hair for his wedding. I think it was his sister who showed him how to darken his beard. She has the same coloring issues he has, but uses makeup and mascara. Athletes can't do that because sweat would wash it off. That Just for Men commercial with Emmit Smith should be banned!
