Monday Headlines: Wackiness Ensues

Josh Vitters wants to be the next Starlin Castro. I'm not sure why, but I keep expecting the next Kevin Orie or Gary Scott.

"I want to be there next year," said Vitters, who is currently getting more at-bats by playing for the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League. "This is my new goal. I want to make it there at some point next year. Whether it be the halfway point or in September, I want to be there next year."

While Vitters isn't exactly tearing up the AFL, he sees hope in the crappiness of the Cubs' current roster.

Vitters said he is close to regaining full strength in his hand after initially feeling some stiffness. Through 12 games, he was 12-for-50 with a home run and eight RBIs.. He plans to remain in Arizona after the AFL season to continue working out with Cubs strength coach Tim Buss.

"The future of the Cubs is definitely the young guys in the minor leagues, along with guys like (Starlin) Castro and (Darwin) Barney," Vitters said. "It's very exciting to know we have a bright future with the team."

And there's excitement surrounding the Cubs' publications department, who will now be an independent voice for the fan.

Cubs fans who have been readers of the team's magazine Vine Line for many years may notice some changes in design and content in the coming months.

What they may not know is that the team is outsourcing the production of the magazine and other publications to a Cincinnati-based firm called EMI Network.

Under the new arrangement, EMI Network will operate and manage all aspects of the team's publications and creative services department.

I don't remember the last time I read Vineline (if ever), but I'm imagining that we can expect hard-hitting journalism now.

As a season ticket holder, I get a free subscription to VineLine...

Outside of a quick glance through to see if there is anything of note to put in my blog, I throw it into the basement in a pile of other magazines that I never read.

Holy Halloween party---sooooo tired this morning. The day after Halloween and the Super Bowl should be a national holiday. Also, I haven't read VineLine since I was in junior high.

I ALWAYS wanted a subscription to that since I was a kid, but no one ever bought me it, guess I didn't miss much.

I'm glad the Halloween party I attended was on Friday, I wasn't recovered until about 8pm on Saturday. I only had 3 kids come to my door yesterday, too much candy leftover around the house, not good...

There are a handful of interesting stories...but in the end, like so many other printed media outlets, often times VineLine is late to the party when giving inside info about the team.

its something to read while waiting for things at convention

I had a 1:1 bags of candy to kids ratio here myself.

flyball said:

I don't even bother buying candy anymore, I haven't had a trick or treater in 8 years

If the journalism is hard-hitting then maybe it can play first base as well.

Leave a comment...I love the optimism from the young guys this time of year, I'm sure most of it is the standard can answers to questions, but for a little while its kinda believable

I mean, I'm not optimistic, but its nice to see someone else is

I bought my dad a Vineline subscription a couple of years back, before he discovered blogs. It was a waste of $$.

Maybe it could play left field and work out of the bullpen as a situational lefty as well.

Looks like Pat Listach will be the bench coach.

*yawn*

I'm ok with yawn, the big "YEAH!" work out for a year and then turn into ^%#@&*#

Doc said:

Was that the big "YEAH" when they hired Dusty or when the hired Lou?

True...Sad, but true. I think the sad part is that he gets hit on by more hot girls than I do. Damn, it sucks being broke!!

Quick question...since we hired Listach as our bench coach, Sandberg is out. What's the chances that he gets hired elsewhere as a bench coach?? Let's say Milwakee with Valentine?? Just a question.

sloan peterson said:

Does that mean more fights in the Cubs future? It might make the next season worth it if the Cubs get into a couple of fights next year...

Doc said:

user-pic

I think there is a good chance of him getting a bench coach job for just about any of the other Brewer candidates other than Bobby Valentine...Joey Cora or Bob Melvin would probably seriously consider it.

HackWilson09 said:

I wonder if he'll give free Listach rides.

This is the most boring, mundane hire ever. Almost insulting. I mean, what is this, the "career minor league manager club"?

I guess it would be tough for Quade to handle a more polished and experienced ego by his side.

Doc said:

user-pic

In the end...I don't know who else Quade could have hired. Really...the only other possibilities, to me, would have been Buddy Bailey or Bill Dancy...and both of them have even less of a name than Listach. The truth is, unless Alan Trammell would have stayed, I doubt any other person with a known name would have even been considered, especially after the backlash that the Cubs have seen after not hiring Ryno.

Next we'll hear that Bruce Kimm will be hired to be the 3b coach.

Doc said:

I'm fairly sure Bruce Kimm has been banned from baseball for the shitty job he did in 2002.

That World Series ring will double hit body weight if he wears it.

The WS trophy is bigger than he is, and the championship t-shirt they all put on comes down to his knees.

The one classy moment: naming all the Giants greats who never won a World Series.
Another great moment-all the LA sportswriters having to eat their words about the Giants......
