A League of Her Own

Friday Morning Headlines

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO - MARCH 10: Moises Alou #18 of The Dominican Republiclooks on against The Netherlands during the 2009 World Baseball Classic Pool D match on March 10, 2009 at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)
So much to talk about, so little reason to get excited. As Julie discussed yesterday, Tom Ricketts wants to borrow a jillion dollars from Illinois. I admire his resourcefulness, and I agree Wrigley needs a Wrenovation, but it's kind of like asking me for $300 million. Do I look like I have that kind of money?

Personally, I'm still hoping the Cubs can purchase the buildings across the street in the outfield, because it would open up a whole world of potential revenu streams from better-constructed seating to a Jumbotron, or maybe even a miniature school for children who can't read good. Or Cliff Lee. Whatever.

In other news, Starlin Castro is headed to the Dominican Winter League where his General Manager will be none other than Moises Alou. The Cubs aren't restricting Castro whatsoever, hoping he will break the record for games played in a 365-day period. His next will be number 7,000 . . . give or take. Here's Starlin's rather verbose take on his goals for winter ball:

"I came to work on my defense, primarily on my throw to first base."

I think we're all in agreement with your focus, Starlin. Although I wouldn't object to some tagging drills at second.
And for the trade-rumors portion of today's headlines, please note that the Fukudome family lends little credence to the reports that Kosuke could be headed out of town.

Cubs outfielder Kosuke Fukudome has bought a three-bedroom condo in a new Lake Shore Drive high-rise for about $1.32 million. Fukudome and his wife, Kasue, had been renting a Gold Coast home since coming over from Japan in 2007.
The condo's great room has a stretch of windows 27 feet wide looking east over Lake Michigan and another 25-foot stretch looking north up the lakefront.
I wouldn't mind seeing Kosuke stick around for the entirety of the season. He hasn't been as good as Hendry hoped, but he hasn't been that bad, either, even outside of April. The only incentive the Cubs have to deal him is to get rid of his contract, but they would probably wind up eating that money anyway. That won't taste good, no matter what the Cubs get in return.

And finally, I'll conclude today's rushed late-morning headlines with five songs from my iPod. Totally and completely random:

Take it to the Limit - Suzy Bogguss
You Send Me - Sam Cooke
Nightswimming - R.E.M.
I'm Not That Girl - Idina Menzel
Tether - Damien Jurado

Let's hear yours, and remember: this is a judge-free zone.*

*Also keep in mind that it's totally not a judge-free zone.

Actually, I think they'd be better off asking you for the money. at least you're not 8 gazillion dollars in debt..

I don't see what it can hurt to let Kosuke give us his usual big April and half of May before Brett Jackson comes up to take his place. Meanwhile, Colvin can try his hand and first base, and we'll just see what happens.

I gotta say, the Rickettses sure are good at bleeding money out of taxpayers. In two states! At least they're good at something.

Kosuke and Kasue? How sickeningly cute.

Don't forget Wrigley Talk Friday is up today at 1:00 pm CT. Lou from the recently-assassinated Cubscast will join us to discuss Wrigley, Tom Ricketts' grasp on economics, and the merits of apearing on reality TV.

At first I didn't realize that was an abbreviation for Kentucky. I was just surprised to learn that KY had a spokesman and very, very scared to click the link.

I can't do iPod today...it's at work and I don't work on Fridays right now. So...consider yourselves reprieved from Styx for the rest of the year.
