Wednesday Headlines: Quade Cleans House

September 1958: An employee of the 'Housewives Help Service', an agency set up by two ex-army officers to supply male home help for busy career women, empties the rubbish in the back yard of a client's house. (Photo by Frank Martin/BIPs/Getty Images)
Quade takes out the trash

Cleaning house, taking out the trash, bidding good riddance to bad rubbish. Mike Quade's had all he can take and he can't take any more of Alan Trammell or Mike Sinatro.

Bench coach Alan Trammell is leaving to take the same job with manager Kirk Gibson of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Special assistant Matt Sinatro, who came in as a coach with manager Lou Piniella in 2007, also will not be back.

We read yesterday that Ryne Sandberg would be considered for the bench coach position. Today you'll read that Ryne Sandberg won't be considered for the bench coach position.

Ryne Sandberg, who lost out to Quade for the manager's job, is not a candidate for the bench-coach position. General manager Jim Hendry has spoken with Sandberg, and Sandberg is welcome to return to his job as manager of the Cubs' Class AAA Iowa farm team. It's possible Sandberg could take another job somewhere in the Cubs' system.

Had Sandberg been named manager, it's unlikely Quade would have remained on the coaching staff.

The plot thickens...

It's election season, and the Cubs aren't taking it sitting down. Ernie Banks and Tom Ricketts are in Mesa, Arizona seeking to influence the outcome of an election.

Mr. Cub Ernie Banks joined Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts in Mesa, Ariz., on Monday to campaign for Proposition 420.

(snip)

Next Tuesday is election day in Mesa and voters will decide on Proposition 420. The measure would let the city of Mesa spend up to $99 million on a new Spring Training facility for the Cubs, expected to be located at the Riverview Park site. The money includes $84 million for a stadium and $15 million for infrastructure.

It's socialism, I tell you! We'll round things out today with the voice of reason: Carrie Muskat's mailbag column. I think one reader finally figured out what ailed the Cubs this season, and we're all going to feel dumb that we didn't figure it out sooner.

Is there any chance the Cubs will try to get a real leadoff hitter this offseason? They haven't had a fast leadoff hitter since Juan Pierre was on the team.

-- Josh P., Los Angeles

I hope so. They seem to have plenty of No. 2 hitters (Starlin Castro, Blake DeWitt, Colvin). This season, the Cubs' leadoff men combined to bat .251, which, unfortunately, was the same average as their No. 4 hitters (one reason the team sputtered offensively). Their No. 1 batters ranked last in the National League in runs scored, totaling 81. The other teams whose leadoff hitters didn't top 100 runs included the Nationals (82 runs), Padres (86), Pirates (93), Cardinals (96), Astros (97) and Mets (99). Kosuke Fukudome has said he likes hitting first, but this season, he batted .193 in 48 games there with a .313 on-base percentage, which ranked 21st among NL leadoff men. That won't get it done.

Sam Fuld is fast, right? Stick him in there!

It sounds like Quade may bring back Pat Listach to the organization as his bench coach. It also looks like Ivan DeJesus will be back as third base coach, which I think is a mistake. I really didn't think DeJesus did all that great of a job there...and having both him and Dernier on the same coaching staff appears redundant to me.

HackWilson09 said:

user-pic

DeJesus looked lost. He and Dernier could switch, at least.

I think a great third base coach is more important than the bench coach.

Doc said:

user-pic

Dernier I think is a great first base coach. Personally, I think Listach should be the third base coach, and someone else can come in and be the bench coach. DeJesus can be a minor league instructor again.

Cubs Psychologist said:

Heard Listach wasn't leaving Washington unless it was a manager position. Just word on the cyber street.

HackWilson09 said:

If we waste resources on a "leadoff man" with BJax ready to come up in May or June...

It'll feel like Hendry is still in charge, I guess.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Uhhhhhhhh..... is Josh from California seriously insinuating that the problem with this team is that it doesn't have Juan Pierre around to not get on base 5 times a game?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Just put Castro at leadoff. Damn, this isn't that hard.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

No, it really isn't. However, I maintain low expectations of this team possessing the ability to figure out such simple things.

HackWilson09 said:

user-pic

Actually, there is no better leadoff man in April than Kosuke Fukodome. His career OBP in April is .440.

Some time in May, give him a one-way ticket to Hiroshima and then bring up Brett Jackson to lead off for the next 12 years. He's as good as they come. Not Patterson, Not Pie -- he walks and steals and scores.

Doc said:

user-pic

Steals? not so much. In fact, Fukudome has been one of the worst base stealers in baseball over the last 2 seasons having been thrown out almost 50% of the time.

HackWilson09 said:

user-pic

I was referring to his future replacement, Brett Jackson.

Doc said:

user-pic

oops...didn't read too carefully...

I get the feeling the Cubs will ruin that kid.

HackWilson09 said:

user-pic

They didn't ruin Castro or Colvin too much.

Most of these guys ruin themselves. Like Pie and Patterson, who seemed to think their work was done after their first big year in the minors. Vitters has wrecked himself. He's more or less done already.

All they need to teach Jackson is how to avoid slumps, because he WILL strike out a lot. But I think he's going to be great. Never seen his kind of walk totals in the Cubs farm system, ever.

Doc said:

user-pic

Castro and Colvin only just completed their first sesason. Remember, Patterson was pretty good in his first couple years. Give the Cubs time to ruin them.

How can you possibly cheer for the Giants after Will Clark, Dusty Baker, and Barry Bonds?

UGH.

The Giants are a team without any stars, other than some pitchers, and here they are, in the World Series. The Cubs might take a cue, and stop looking for some high-paid Messiah to lead them to the promised land. It's what you do with what you've got. Good news is we don't have to hate Freddy Sanchez or Cody Ross anymore.

Doc said:

Sandberg wants to be in the big leagues this year...so I'd think he would be willing to take just about any bench coach position that would be offered to him.

But, in the end, I don't think Cora gets the Brewers job, so it really doesn't matter.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

i think that is HILARIOUS.

i can't WAIT for Cubs Con if that happens!

Doc said:

It's sounding like Valentine is the Brewers' pick...I'm surprised they can afford him.

I can't believe that any state would call a stadium ballot inititive "Proposition 420"......

Doc said:

user-pic

actually, I think Proposition 420 is the Arizona initiative to legalize marijuana and tax it to raise money for a new Cubs spring training facility...

Either that or it's the gay marriage initiative that would raise money by selling marriage licenses to gay couples.

ELRaythar said:

user-pic

Actually, prop 420 is the Arizona initiative that cuts on everything of value to Arizona citizens, adds a tax for living in this shitty state, and then takes half the tax and puts it right in Brewer's "Picking up Heads in the Desert" program.

If we are going to talk about bad acting, I vote From Justin To Kelly. I was sick during a conference and my roommate left the TV on HBO. I almost gauged my eyes and ears!!

Twilight. I think it was the first time I ever wanted to swear off entertainment forever.

Doc said:

But that was expected to be back...you go and see something with the name "The Godfather" in it, you expect a certain level of quality. From Justin To Kelly would never have fooled me into watching it.

Doc, I was sick!! I had no clue it was on until I came back from puking my guts out. It was like a bad train wreck, with music. I couldn't turn away.

scariest movie? Halloween (the original). Its my favorite and a halloween tradition.

Plus, its frightening, because its very possible that could actually happen, and it was before Michael Meyers died like ten times and just became a joke.

The mood and entire vibe of that movie is downright scary and awesome.

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Original "Psycho" was pretty scary. So much so, that most of the plot was forgotten-just the shower scene...

sloan peterson said:

Also I had to watch "poltergiest" in stages, watching the making of documentaries before finishing the film. I'm not a gory kind of viewer....

good call, original Pyscho was pretty awesome. I just cant get the Vince Vaughn version out of my head, he wasnt terrible as Norman bates, but at the end when he's dressed up as "mother" it just cracks me up every time.
